Spore Creature Creator Trial!
Omigosh omigosh omigosh the Spore Creature Creator is out, for both PC and Mac!

I've got the Mac trial demo installed and am just about to give it a spin. I'm really keen on getting a taste of how Spore will feel like, and to see if there's any obvious issues with Mac compatibility. I'll post more i…

Trazoi Logo Design #3
...continuing on from the last step...

I narrowed down the list of typefaces to a few that caught my eye, and out of those I chose three to use in a few mock-ups:

Left: Marker Felt (comes with Mac OS X)
Centre: Icicle Country 2 (a free Larabie Font)
Right: Hobo Std (Adobe font)

Incidentally, I really re…

Trazoi Logo Design #2
This is a continuation of the logo design notes from before. Feel free to put any comments for that post under this one.

I've had a brief look at fonts by going through all the ones installed on my computer and comparing ones that catch my interest. Here's a sampler:

There's a variety of techie looki…

Trazoi Logo Design #1
Gah, I've been procrastinating like crazy over the last day or two. I guess I need to impose a moratorium on myself for posting in the Lounge until I get things going again, although I'll still probably take a peek in there now and again to see what's going on. I've got very poor self control.

At th…

Games once again destroying society
Lengthy trial folds as jurors play Sudoku

A THREE-month drugs trial has been aborted at a cost of "millions" after the jury's forewoman admitted playing the number game Sudoku for at least half of the trial.

The District Court trial in Sydney, which cannot be identified for legal reasons, was aborted…

Organising Game Ideas
I just noticed in the control panel that I'm on 4444 posts, with an average of just under 4 posts per day to GameDev.net. It doesn't sound too much until you realise that's 4 posts on average over the course of three years. I probably should have a few more GameDev.net free days, although I find th…

More thoughts on copy protection
I've been making some posts on copy protection over in a thread in the lounge at the moment which I think is best expanded upon here, otherwise I'd completely hijack the other thread to my own purposes. Plus it fits neatly as a continuation from my previous journal post.

In the last journal post I e…

Thoughts on copy protection
I only caught up with the buzz that's been going on in some murky corners of the internet over the announcement of the Super SecuROM copy protection scheme for using the PC version of Mass Effect today. I got drawn in by the tag-line that it's going to be used in Spore as well, given that Spore's t…

Cartooning practice and Inkscape 0.46
I made a post about this in my own journal at trazoi.net, but I know more people view the one here (and who can blame you?) It's more art than gamedev related, but there are strong gamey overtones.

I'm currently practising my cartooning via the new Inkscape (0.46) to see how well it ticks, as well a…

...

My brief experimentation with prototyping a new game idea in Flash didn't quite get off the ground. I realised pretty early on that I'm way too new with the whole Flash thing to do anything creative within the few hours I had. I spend most of that time fighting against the interface and trying to f…

Random Game Element Widget
It's Easter Sunday and halfway through the Easter break. I've been re-acquainting myself with Flash. I've got the urge to make some happy fun bouncy type games, but I've got an insane amount of things going on at the moment so I'm limiting myself to throwaway prototypes in the next couple of months…

Dwarves and Ponies
Not that much more has been done in Python game programming, I'm afraid. This week I started teaching tutorials and hosting labs at uni after a several year break, and things have been a bit crazy while I try to refind my stride.

I've also got sidetracked a bit by Dwarf Fortress. I checked it up aga…

incompetech.com
This is unrelated to my Python experiments, but I thought this site is useful enough to plug. I'd noticed incompetech.com before when I was running the week long MAGIC contest, as it's got a great selection of royalty free music. But I only just noticed today it's also got a great section of downlo…

Processing Input

Here we have a 10x10 square that I can move around with the arrow keys - I've got input working, and a key mapping based on a dictionary that maps key codes to functions. The event system has been tweaked a bit and everything looks ready to go.

I've been spending much of my hacking time just figurin…

Python event class
I've thrown together a Python version of the signal/event class I have as the cornerstone of my C++ game engine:

class Event:
"""Event class: stores a list of functions that can be all called in sequence.
A one-to-many type function construct.
"""
def __init__(self):

Curses and Curtsy

I'll keep on posting pictures of Terminal to make use of my space here. I've been playing with what you can do with the cap on colours and characters in curses (yay alliteration). There doesn't appear to be a grey, but there is bold and non-bold that can similar different intensities to an extent. …

Curses!

I've got the urge to start programming again, so while I'm busy with wrapping up study I'm going to have a break now and then to continue learning Python.

I think I'll learn best if I attempt to make some projects, so I'm looking into making some ASCII games using Python's curses module. I don't par…

Another Important Milestone Reached...
...in this case, my thirtieth birthday. The big Three-Oh. You youngsters had better respect my ability at staying alive.

Somewhat related to me getting older, is the forum having a bigger upsurge than usual of new posters? I seem to see a higher than usual newbie count in the recent threads, but tha…

The font of wisdom (not really)
So here's my game font in development after I've got some capitals:

The spacing is a bit whack, and the second line there shows that the sizing of the letters is a bit off. I'll need to do a bit of fiddling around with their dimensions to make sure they look good in combination.

Designing my own font
Over the next couple of days I'm planning on making a font out of own handwriting, so I'll have something that's uniquely mine. I'm aiming for a sort of fun, cartoony font that I can use in both games and in comics.

Currently all I've done is the lowercase alphabet in Inkscape; I'm planning on impor…

Obligatory new computer pic

That's my new iMac on the right, collection of USB gadgets on the left. Not nearly as impressive as some of the rigs I've seen in the journals, but I've got enough stuff now to do pretty much whatever I wish, game dev wise.

Hunt the Wumpus
It looks like I've broken the 4000 post mark sometime in the last few days; a clear indicator I've been hanging around here longer than is good for me [smile].

Yesterday I finished up my first Python game; I made a post on it, but I'll duplicate the code here. It's not particularly spectacular; it's…

Python - First Baby Steps
Alongside writing up my dissertation and sketching down ideas for my webcomic project (still keen on starting that in the near future), I've finally cracked open a Python tutorial and started learning. I'm currently working through Dive Into Python - not got very far, just up to classes, but so far…

Happy New Year 2008
Hi everyone! Hope you've all had a good end of 2007 and are ready for an exciting new year!

Today I'm back from my trip to visit and generally hang out with family in Melbourne, and I'm preparing for 2008. It was a decent time off, although I didn't get nearly as much hobby stuff done as I thought I…

Python anyone?
I've been procrastinating at work more than usual in this last week before Christmas. There's been a whole bunch of distractions in both end-of-year shenanigans and so on, but admittedly I'm wasting time looking forward to the holiday week. I've got plans to get stuck into projects I've been puttin…

No MacBook Pro over Christmas
I checked in my laptop for repairs again, meaning I'll be without my laptop over Christmas so no new Flash games over the holidays. Grr.

Since I'm annoyed I haven't been able to use my Mac software this month I'm putting in serious consideration to getting an iMac in January. It seems a bit counter-…

The Ongoing Saga of the MacBook Pro
Well, my MacBook Pro is back and looks partly repaired, and partly broken again. The good news is that the screen appears operational again - maybe one more dead pixel (why do I keep attracting those?!), but at least the back light is on again.

The bad news is that the laptop seems to be randomly re…

Fan Art
Hey all. I've been lazy in posting updates and let my journal slip off the radar. Although that has something to do with my lack of actual game related progress. Annoyingly I've been geared up to play with Flash some more, but my MacBook Pro screen's backlight broke and it's been in the shop all we…

Keeping my journal alive
I've been neglecting this journal so long it slipped off the page. I feel guilty when that happens. Unfortunately, I feel more guilty that I don't really have anything game related to post. I've hardly had anything to do with games in the last few weeks - making or playing them. But I feel obliged …

Sorry about the lack o' updates; I've been skimping a bit in the ol' game developing department. I've been using my spare time to work on my desire to start a webcomic, although that's led to me spending a lot more time surfing the more interesting sites I've found in my "research" rather than work…
