As some of you know, I'm heavily influenced and inspired by our own Ben Ryves's awesome work, especially his awesome Z80 computer ( http://benryves.com/journal/3691543 notice how he named it 'A useful Z80 computer'. Useful for what, Ben? ). As such I decided that my work on the Portable C64 can't b…
Today I continued venture in high resolution bitmap mode of C64's VIC-II. As I mentioned yesterday, I started adding colors. First attempt looked butchered, but that was obvious for me when I started working on it. I used iteration depth as color for pixels in the 8x8 char area, and it gave me thes…
Today I stopped playing with the text mode and entered bit mapping mode ( or, for modern people - bitmap mode ).
VIC-II, C64's graphics chip allows for resolutions of up to 320x200. In text mode that display is divided into 40x25 ( 1000 continuous characters ), each of which is 8x8 pixels big. As I …

Next day of studying the VIC-II architecture and using BASIC to play around with it.
First, I managed to solve yesterday's problems - since the booklet I was reading from is, like I said, crappy quality, I tried peeking 53240 instead of 53248 ( 0xd000 ) for character ROM. Once I translated the value…

I have finally returned to developing my C64 skills. I've set up a computer dedicated to that purpose, and now am able to play around with it. Currently following C64 programmer's reference guide 3 - programming graphics. I'm at the beginning, which is setting up charset. Unfortunately, the booklet…
Finally, I have some time to work on my own projects!
I've joined local hackerspace, and with a friend we decided to revitalize couple old C64s (after some deliberation on platform - it was either that or ZX Speccy). At first we want to add some simple functionality like SD card reader, but eventual…

Me and couple my friends started something we like to call 'Little 4 Elements'. It's based on gdnet's 4E, only you have 1 week to make a FULL game. Only rule is - if the game isn't completed, it does not count.
Elements that were chosen (randomly) were scissors, breadcrumbs, glitter and knuckles. Fr…

Just a quick update because it's 2am and I'm really tired.
I worked a bit on the RTS game, adapting XNA's VectorRumble example to work the way I want it. Now we have a blob (unanimated) that changes freely into Circle, Square and Triangle, moves around and splits. Also basic client-server system has…

And, after brief 2 weeks break (I think), I'm returning to developing. As you may know I have a kind of designers' ADHD, and I'm constantly plagued by tons of game ideas that would be cool to implement. Ones I had in the mean time include:
EEG-based game (you'd have to construct your own EEG detecto…
Soooo... I've been to London.
I flew after the work, so I've arrived at city centre at 2AM. Good luck trying to find a place to stay at that hour in the middle of the summer. So I walked around the Kings Cross area and finally at 4am managed to find a bed and breakfast room so tiny I could barely wa…

It seems that programming isn't going to work for me during Euro Cup. I wanted to pick it up again, but then I managed to get ticket to The Police in London, so I'm flying there today. Fantastic! (you read that in The Doctor's voice).
Edit:
This has two downsides; one - I won't be able to see what B…

Aww shit. After working for week non-stop on one project, I got into little burndown. So I started working on small, minimalistic RTS, a battle of geometric figures, similar to Geometry Wars in look. Platform: C#/XNA. The game is supposed to be multiplayer only, a recovery project more than somethi…
Allright, I didn't code yesterday. After week of coding non-stop (at work and at home) I _HAD_ to take the break. I haven't shaved in a week and look like a freakin coconut, I ran out of clean clothes to wear and I emptied whole fridge, tossing empty wrappings/food packaging as far from my door-toi…
Wow, it's been a week since I've started the blog. My personal hygiene went down the drain, my social life is nonexistant - every free second I spend in front of computer, trying to uncover mysteries of Nintendo DS.
Today I managed to get sprites running on both screens, but I still don't completely…

Although today's picture may not show it well, lots of important progress have been made. The progress is as follows
-I am now able to display 2D backgrounds
-I can now map 2D coordinates using orthogonal view into DS GL
-Display on both screens at the same time is now possible.
So, without further ado…

Today I created VERY MINIMAL particle engine, and made it shoot fireworks wherever I pointed with stylus:
Still haven't figured out why the colors are so bland and I encountered another obstacle: glOrtho that was supposed to enable me emulation of 2D in 3D apparently doesn't work the same way the PC…

I managed to isolate the functions I need to use in my engine thanks to working with examples that came with devkitPro. I worked a bit more with bitmaps today and figured out how to display alpha-channeled textures correctly:
For some weird reason the colours of textures on DS seem to be bland (comp…

I'm still probing devkitPro for all the features I need, and from time to time when I see API getting complicated I have to close my eyes and think about my safe place. Where is my C# cushion when I need it? Oh well, kudos to all low-level/engine programmers out there, how you understand anything f…
Since I have a devjournal, it would be good to do some developing, wouldn't it? The game that I'll develop is a casual game for Nintendo DS (casual in the positive, Tetris-like pick-and-play meaning) for which idea has been bouncing around my head for about a year now. My goals when designing the g…
