Mood Detection

I was wondering, and thinking about how you could use a players input from any input device, keyboard, joystick etc to determine what kind of mood the player is in. Depending on how they use the keys, button bashing, slow simple movements etc could determine how the person feels at that moment in time.

A-> If the player is bashing away at the keys franticly, they are most likley excited or in fear of somthing in the game.

B-> If they are being cautious pressing little keys and moving a joypad/mouse slowly they are most likley quite nervous about the situation.

This lead me on to think how a game could be programmed to respond to the players mood, making it more exciting for them. Like if the player is in mood A (shown above) some hardcore rock music could kick in or even triggering more enemies to fly at them, the game could respond in any way which makes the player more button bashing crazy.

With B it could kick in some eerie music to make it more suspense.

The problem with the above is that you cant stage a game very well, if a player is just running around firing at random boxes and going crazy and yet there are no enemies, it doesnt make sense to kick in some hardcore rock music (althou it would be cool). Plus you would lose a sense of control to the game, it wouldnt allow you to make the player tense, when you wanted them to feel tense.

Im not sure if this has been done or even used in any games before, it was just an idea i came up with today... Any comments?

Good day to you all!

Yep yep yep, Ima in a real good mood today. http://digitalhobos.com/ is now up, atleast a coming soon page.

Ive also been considering entering this years 4elements contest, its alot more interesting this time i think and there are going to be alot of entries.

A few of my ideas included RTS/Fighting game, but I think everyone is going to do that, I wanted to gain alot for originality since my level of technology isnt that high, if I can create somthing fun, original and simple it will allow me to give it a good polish and maybe get some kudos points for luck :D

Ive been working on an idea, Im not going to let anything out because I dont want anyone stealing my ideas! not that any of you would ofcourse... the current problem with my idea though is a fun or gameplay aspect, ive alot of things to work out, then document it ofcourse, ive already decided on the engine (irrlicht) and networking library (raknet), probably fmod for sound.

Btw kudos points to the gdnet team for the really cool 4 elements!

A logo for the digital hobos

Ive been doing lots of things recently, for some reason im still highly into web development, im actually in the works developing a system which I will hopefully sell within the next 2 - 3 months and make a few hundred buckaroos. Its built around http://heartagram.org/ a site I also developed. Its going well.

On another note, I bought some hosting for http://digitalhobos.com/ and Ive been thinking of a logo for it but since I suck at art, totally, I havent been able to produce whats in my head, does anyone facy taking a go at it?

I was thinking maybe a hobo, or a hobo face, or somthing simple that looks like a hobo, i cant actually think of anything else (or there is also some crazy hobo symbols apparently) that i might be able to use.... if anyone has any ideas, let me know :)

Ok I know im crazy, but i figure as one of my aims in life is to start my own game development team and release some titles, so why not start now?

I do need some help building the foundations, so if anyone wishes to join the team, let me know your skills =)

World of Warcraft Rawks!

I havent posted in a long time, recently Ive been playing lots and lots and lots of WOW, Because it is one, truely awesome kickass game. It amazes me how easy it is to get into and yet how hard at later levels it is to play, Blizzard are the geniouses behind it all, the balence between everything is perfect, there is n ever anything short to do in it, its just one truely awesome game, i give it 10/10. oneone

On a side note ive also been playing transport tycoon delux (open ttd) http://www.openttd.com/. Its a remake/improvment of the original tycoon game by Chris Sawyer, this includes a great improvment on multiplayer capabilities which is fun to play with friends.

And yes, I have been coding! The last project which i complained about in my last post, has had a revamp, same idea, differnt theme kind of thing. Ive been using raknet to network things and i have a nice interface and a console going, im hoping to get a level editor done soon, but im actually having fun! Ill keep you guys up to date.

L.A.M.E

Ok so today, im annoyed, stressed. ive been coding for the past 8 hours or so, well probably closer to 5 but still, its annoyed me.

I managed to get somthing up and running, my code now generates an environment class with a list of environment "chunks", each of these chunks contains information for where it is placed and what texture it relates to.

But the issue arose that all the textures were the same, i was like wtf. This isnt right, Oluseyi thought it was my memcpy so i spent an hour or so figuring it out with him. no luck. (btw thanks Oluseyi)

I sat and thought and looked and debugged for a further hour and realised it was down to DX. Tricking me!!!!! god damn.

HRESULT WINAPI D3DXCreateTextureFromFileEx( LPDIRECT3DDEVICE9 pDevice,
LPCTSTR pSrcFile,
UINT Width,
UINT Height,
UINT MipLevels,
DWORD Usage,
D3DFORMAT Format,
D3DPOOL Pool,
DWORD Filter,
DWORD MipFilter,
D3DCOLOR ColorKey,
D3DXIMAGE_INFO *pSrcInfo,
PALETTEENTRY *pPalette,
LPDIRECT3DTEXTURE9 *ppTexture
);

This function has a parameter D3DXIMAGE_INFO *pSrcInfo as stated by the SDK:

[in, out] Pointer to a D3DXIMAGE_INFO structure to be filled in with a description of the data in the source image file, or NULL

A fsking DESCRIPTION OF THE DATA IN THE IMAGE FILE. Ok, so i forgot about this for a while.

An hour later it turns out, after calling these few functions:

IDirect3DSurface9 *surf;
D3DSURFACE_DESC pDesc;
tempLargeTexture->GetSurfaceLevel(0, &surf);
surf->GetDesc(&pDesc);

the actual surface level of the texture is auto-matically scaled down to fit the graphics card. It would have been nice if the data contained within the D3DIMAGE_INFO was correct, then i wouldnt have spent 5 hours on this 1 damn bug.

god damn microsoft.

on a lighter note, can anyone suggest a way to disable this auto-scaling, or maybe some way of loading an "A1R5G5B5" texture, there is no documentation on this texture type as a bitmap, but for some reason windows and everything else can load it. (btw i haveto load this texture type)

On this note, i must sleep, my arms hurt, my fingers hurt, my eyes hurt and im annoyed, DirectX let me down.

Alright!

Alright, now where talking, for once in my sorry coding life ive got some coding done. teh wows.

I mentioned a few days ago about the design doc i was doing, thats all finished now, ive been programming the level loading, so far its going good.

Ive managed to write some code to load a massive texture and split it up into somthing that a device supports, next step.. uhm not sure yet, but ill work it out, probably rendering that texture? :)

Ill have a demo up in about a week i hope.

New Project, Yet again!!

So, yes guys. Im working on a new project, (yet again) ive written up a design document, and ive been working on a technical design document which i will provide if the game nears somthing like completion, but i have a habit of not completing things :)

So today is the first day of programming it, im not giving anything away, although some of you from #gamedev might already know what im talking about.

Ill keep you all up to date,

Regards.

Sleep.

Ok, So on friday night I was out in leeds till about 4am. The next day i woke up at 10, saturday night was a normal night went to bed around 11.30, woke up at 8 the next day for work. But since its christmas week and i work part time at morrisons, it was the worst sunday ever!! So i did an 8-7 shift, Came home, ate some food and fell asleep, now im posting here (11.28)? Thats like 4 hours sleep! Now im all alert, and ready, il never sleep tonight. Blah.

Anyways, on a lighter note I have been thinking of a new game concept.

A friend was talking to me the other day describing a game, but the way he described it made me think. Imagine a 3rd person shooter combined with a light-gun shoot em up.

The player could run around levels, then when it came to fight somone, the game view would change to a light-gun style shoot em up. This could occur in certain siuations such as when your hiding behind boxes, or when your crouched aiming at an enemy, The only issue with this is that it would require two pieces of hardware, a gun and a joypad. But if you invented some kind of new hardware where you could have a gun ( or dual :D ) in a holster, you could run around and draw your weapon ( so it switched into shooting mode) then when you replaced it, went back into normal 3rd person mode. The other option here is to have a combined lasergun and joypad (not sure if these exsist).

Now... Time to find somthing to do. Toodles.

Im back!

Ive been away for a while, i especially have not been posting in my journal. I have been doing alot of thinking into what i want to do, And I have made a decision. I will be going to univercity to study computer games programming, It should be a fun course, meet some new people :) get drunk alot :D. You see, I do alot of different stuff, I like web coding (because its easy) but I also love games programming because its difficult, challenging and the eventual outcome can be amazing, So hopefully this time next year ill be at uni wahey!!

I have recently been using Managed Direct X and C# its quite good fun to use. Its much, much simpler and I managed to write a simple space sim going with it in a couple of days. However I decided to scrap it because of the design of my code.

Also, take a look at Asheh.Com, I redesigned it, mostly stole the design from rob loach ( visa versa ) ;).

I submitted an article to gamedev which I will continue to write if the first part appears here, lets hope it does!

Visual C++ 6, its an error with the ofstream itself, So if anyone has VC6 and doesnt have the library fixes, www.stlport.org is the place to go.

Anyways, back to work!

When I got back i was going to work on my new project, which by the way is coming along just fine, maybe a very basic demo out in the next few days.

But, I got caught up in http://heartagram.org/ since I program the php/mysql for it, and i needed to do some work on it for a friend. SO ive been doing that all night, my arms hurt, my eyes are square, my fingers are falling off... i neeed... sleeep.......

Asheh.Com Updates and new project

Ok ive just started a new project, Its a new library im building especially for me! Just somthing complex/simple enough to easily get me straight into the devleopment of a game, rather than the basecode. Should be done in a month but ill keep you up to date.

Also, many updates to Asheh.Com I updated the rest of the pages and added a new one, entertainment! I will add reviews and stuff here, and anything else i find entertaining.

Over and oot!

Updates on Asheh.Com

Ok its not that late (10:20pm) but im really tired for some reason, been working all day. I didnt post an entry yesterday because I was too tired also, but it was later and I also didnt sleep the night before. Anyways...

Ive been working on Asheh.Com quite a bit, the news page is done and I think the design is finalized. I will update the projects page probably soon, but for now the news will have to do.

Also, im not sure how many read this but im looking for some ideas on a sim game, like somthing simple but fun: sim ant? i played sim sheep the other day. But Ive always wanted to make this type of game, any ideas would be cool so -> comment if you can!

First Journal Entry, and Asheh.Com

Okay, so here I am. Alot of stuff has been happening on my side, I emailed the nice guys at gamedev to try and get my username back. And guess what, ive got it!!! Some guy from malaysia stole it like 4 year ago and was never active. So asheh is mine.

Today, also was the official release date of DOOM 3 in england. So i went out and bought it, despite the fact my PC can only just run it. Although it actually runs pretty well, and I have to say that i crapped myself several times for the first hour of playing, then it started getting a bit repetative but its a very very awesome game. Ill play some more later and tell you all. Oh, if anyone fancies a multiplayer PM me :).

Also, I was messing around entering domains the other day, and guess what, ASHEH.COM was available, the legend now has a domain. Probably add some stuff up there at some point, when the DNS transfers that is.

Also special thanks to acoustica for my (netify)
