Okay, that was a nightmare. When the font object is created (its implemented with SDL_TTF) it creates a nice big texture with every possible character on it. Which is... kind of yuck. But it gets the job done, and minimizes texture switches, which means I can render all text with a single batched call.

And I've been watching Evangelion for a year on and off, and I still have no idea what the hell is going on. Is that normal?

Yes, and if you can't handle that, you should watch FLCL

That actually is a good solution (the TTF stuff you're doing). It would be so much faster for drawing and you don't have to worry about creating a new surface for every little string you want to print.

Evangelion is a fantastic series, but you have to not think about it. There are only few parts that are simply amazing, and those parts are worth watching the series. After watching the series, be sure to watch the movies. One of them just makes you go "WTF" and the other makes you go "holy shit that was fucking awesome".

Yeah, too bad the english version of Evangelion I watch has all the boobies covered up :(
