Back to Internet Explorer it is...

Nothing hugely exciting happening on the Gaming/Multimedia/DirectX front... but this evening I've switched back to Internet Explorer as my primary browser.

I first picked up FireFox about 18 months or so ago - mainly because the previous owner of my IBM Thinkpad had an early (v0.7 I think) release installed. I liked the minimalist UI and tabbed browsing so I've stuck with it since then.

Over the last few releases (forget where I am now - 1.5.2?) it seems to have got progressively slower and slower. Starting the thing up got slower - I'm not the type to leave it permanently open (despite what my GameDev posting statistics might suggest) so this annoyed me. Then on one of the previous releases I started getting odd little stalls from the UI - It'd start loading something in one tab and it'd lock the whole browser. Earlier builds just locked up the single tab until it'd done whatever it was doing...

FireFox is now getting in my way. I want my computer to bend towards the way I work, not the other way around. As soon as any software crosses that line AND I have a free alternative its just gotta go.

Since late '05 I've also been running IE7 Beta-1. Saw it when I was over in Seattle and thought I'd give it a whirl. Had quite a few bugs in it and I didn't much like the interface. The rest of it seemed pretty much like IE6 with tabbed browsing.

This evening I decided to go check out IE Beta-2. It's been out for a while, but I've been too busy and had little motivation to bother upgrading.

It's MUCH better than beta-1 from first impressions. It's faster, it's not stalled. It's got the Vista-like UI as well now (much less chunky than beta-1). I like it.

So, I went into the "Set Program Access and Defaults" and changed back to IE. Bye-bye FireFox - you were good, but now your old fat and slow [lol]

During the uninstall of Beta-1 I somehow managed to break Media Player. So I've also got the MP11 beta to play with now.

I believe Opera is now completely free as well. They claim to have "The fastest browser on Earth." Might be worth a go for you.

For what it's worth, I haven't had the problems you're describing with Firefox. Did you install any extensions or themes?

I suggest you try Opera. I used Firefox for ages, but recently switched over. I've tried Opera in the past and not liked it, but if you take the time to customise it the way (doesn't take too long) you want its the best browser by far IMHO. No memory leaks or slowdowns too. I'm using Opera 9 Beta.

If IE7 doesn't do the trick then I might give it a go. TBH, I'm a little lazy - I'll only go out of my way for new software if I have a particular need for it (or if my current alternative requires it) [smile]

Nope... I had a couple (like GDNet's rating thingy)...

I'm fairly simple with my usage of such things - I dont really go for the themes/extensions stuff in any software [smile]

I just updated FF each time it told me I should, and each one got progressively worse as far as my user experience went [headshake]

Cheers,
Jack

I'm currently using FF as well, and chances are once I do the big switch to Vista* I'll just use IE7 since that'll have tabbed browsing. The main reason why I switched to FF anyways was just because of the tabbed browsing. If IE has it, I'll be going back.

*Won't be getting IE7/WMP11/Office 2007/other Vista-generation apps for my XP machine, nor will I be betaing them or looking at (m)any screenshots. My switch to Vista will be instantaneous, without personal precedent, and complete. No half-way crap [wink]. Also, won't be upgrading until I get my next new computer (e.g. 2GB of RAM, new motherboard, new case, Conroe CPU probably, D3D10 GPU).

Biggest flaw (or security) of Opera: ya can't view saved passwords.. And people tend to forget..

I use Firefox, but it recently broke. When I type singlequote a few times it goes into Text-Search mode. And I can't copy/paste sometimes. =/

I have Firefox and it works fine for me...

Hopefully when Firefox 2.0 comes out that you try it out again to see if it has caused any of your problems to go away...
