Okay, so I've spent the past couple hours reading over various important campaigns of the Second Great War, and I really enjoy it. I don't, however, want to just make another WW2 game. There are plenty of those already, and most of them are done better than I can do. I want to make something of my own, something unique.

That said, I do want to incorperate specifics which parallel the generel flow and ebs of the war. Right now, I'm focusing on several specific campaigns from the beginning of the war -

  • Fall Weiss ("Case White") - 1 September, 1939

  • Fall Gelb ("Case Yellow") - 10 May, 1940

  • Betrieb Barbarossa ("Operation Barbarossa") - 22 June, 1941

These three campaigns represent, to me, the establishment of the "Empire", being the literal translation of Reich, since I want to establish that my history is not historical. Another idea I'm playing with is flipping all of the maps upside down -

(Germany and Surrounding States)

The problem I'm encountering is, I suck at writing history. My strategy at this point is to approach it top-down, and realistically. The game will follow the story of several tank commanders in a division, probably three, two male, one attractive female as they're deployed. They're just three people (for the most part, eventually you'll be able to command a larger force) and don't represent a decisive power with respect to the war.

With this in mind, I first need to decide the actual path the war will take, and what will happen. One problem with this is idea of "player victory! yet loss" which inevitably will occur if the players remain loyal to the Empire and I to history. At the same time, I do want the Empire to lose (because they're NAZIS OMG).

This, I think, can be accomplished with several narrative tactics. I'm still working it all out, but its coming along. I think.

Additionally, focusing on the storyline of a small group of friends will allow me to address the "Emotion" theme within the RTS genre. Expect much discussion of the validity of the Empire's military actions (invasion of Poland? right. Underestimation of Soviet forces? ownt!) as the situations worsen on the Eastern front (especially, historically, after Operation Typhoon, a last ditch attempt to capture Moscow in the winter).

You, Sir, grow increasingly more awesome as time goes on-
I'm a big "fan" of the Eastern Front- everyone seems to ignore it somewhat, glorifying the western powers' contributions to the war. I'd recomend Operation Barbarossa by Alan Clark, but it's pretty dry(but thorough).

The Battle of Kursk (and the good book by Robin Cross) would make a great falling action, being the last major offensive operation by the Germans- the one that really sealed their fate.

Hmmm... Good Luck, I need to stop getting distracted from my own projects[wink]

Kursk definetly needs to be in a game focusing on tanks. A quote from wikipedia about this battle:

Quote:
It remains the largest armored engagement of all time

I agree with Prinz Eugn, it's rare to see a game, or any form of media, focused on the Eastern front of WW2. I'm really looking forward to seeing where you go with this one.

No worries, Kursk is definitely on the menu, being one of my favorite BF1942 maps of all time :D

I'm glad to see you guys are interested though! I'll be sure to keep you up to date on my not-so-secret project as I figure out what's going on [wink]

Keep up the awesome suggestions (I have to keep reading up on my WW2 - haven't watched the history channel in over a month :O)

As a side note, superpig is still going on (last I checked) about Russia not being part of Europe. But screw that, most of the game is going to take place on the Eastern Front, though I'll have to have some of it take place in Europe.

Well, the Eastern Front takes place almost exlusively west of the Urals, which just about every geographist I can name considers the boundary of Asia and Europe

Unfortunately, superpig doesn't, but I'm going to ignore that completely, acting on previous precedents and do whatever the hell I want, which in this case, is to make Russia part of Europe [lol]

(or to beg for the part of the game based in "Europe" to be enough, whichever the case may be - I'm trying not to create too much of a rukus because superpig saved my ass quite recently LOL)

You can easily claim that Hitler was trying to make Europe bigger, so whatever Germany conquered became part of Europe... (the whole Lebensraum-Aryan race thing)
