Space station and MT11 update

Shawn has pretty much finished the space station. The interior is now complete with all textures, and he has reworked some elements on the exterior. Minus a few details, the station is now complete and Shawn is moving on to other tasks ( modeling a life pod and the first city buildings ).

I've taken a new video to show off the space station. This video, unlike the previous ones, was taken in the combat prototype meaning that the shaders are missing a couple of effects / correct lighting. Don't expect to see it in 0.4 or in a next patch, though, this is not the purpose of the prototype.

Space station video ( Divx4 32.7 MB )

In other news, i've been busy in the past days on the latest version of the Minas Tirith project ( this has delayed the release of the upcoming space combat prototype 0.4 ). Version 11.1 is now available:

Get it here (126 MB)

You'll need a powerful configuration for this release: CPU 2 Ghz, 1 GB ( 2 recommended ), GPU: NV 6600 GT+ or ATI X800+ 128 MB ( 256 MB recommended ).

It now features a brand new compass/map, damage when falling down, better lighting, bump/normal shaders ( only used in very specific surfaces ), leaning, physics fixes, instancing of geometry, and of course a lot of new buildings to visit, thanks to all the modeler team.

Your real-time screenshots look like the jaw-dropping prerendered FMV in Wing Commander 3.

BTW, I'm running the "Image of the Day" forum for now on GDNet; I would frontpage any and all images you send by. So, erm, please send by some images -- the queue has dried up.

I'd gladly do it but i don't want to flood the queue; i've already sent some images 3 or 4 times since the IOTD was launched.. but if that's okay with you, i should have a new bunch of screens available in a couple of days :)

Hey, the station looks awesome!

A few things, though

* the scaffoldings between the 2 saucer sections look somehow out of place
its just too thick/large for stabilization (who needs that in space, anyway?)

* have you thought about a little bit of fog inside the station?
like in the Independence Day mothership, but less pronounced
this might give a better feeling of its size
(maybe breathable athmosphere being held back by a force field at the gates,
or some gas from the engines/reactor/whatever to convince the realims guys)

* another thing is the interior lighting
maybe my monitor is adjusted too dark, but somehow all the little lights
inside don't look extremely convincing, maybe they need a little bit of bloom
(some need more and some less)

* this alone cannot fully explain the ambient level inside yet, so I would try
out a few very bright light sources, maybe at the top or bottom of the station
and this is where we get back to the fog... :-)
if you had these bright interior lights, you could render true volumetric
fog (y'know, with those shadow volumes like in the recent Elveon trailer)
and this would make the bridges and ships inside cast INSANELY COOL shadows
into the fog

PLEASE!! ;-)

Very amazing. If you guys can texture this, then you surely won't really have problems with the battleships - how many textures did this thing take?

The scale is gigantic. Wow. And it even has landing pads :D Are the arms sticking out on the bottom half for connecting to capital ships?

I'd argue that the interior is a bit too colorful. Do you really need five+ different color of neon lights inside? Imho it looks abit like something from a cartoon. I'm not sure that's what you are aiming for?

What i think is really impressive is the ambient while getting out of the station seeing space. It really _feels_ huge while looking around! Is it really you can fly to some stars stuff you see in the back? Or am i wrong here?

Anyway, impressive. Very impressive.

Any screenshots, anytime, would be much appreciated. I'm getting maybe one new submission every day (and only about 3 worth approving per week). Not nearly enough.

Yeah, that might get added later. The problem is, there's no level loading, it's all seamless; so from the exterior ( in space ) you can see the interior and vice-versa. The fog would need to be volumetric..

It's an early version. I plan to implement HDRI later.

Yeah, actually there's already some geometry for it (light projectors), but the shaders aren't done yet.

20 MB of textures for the exterior (a various mix of jpg, png and tgas) and around 51 MB for the interior. That's for files on disk only, i'm not sure how much it takes in video memory, but with texture compression, that's probably no more than a few tens of MB.

Not yet, the stars in the back are part of the sky box, but once the galaxy generator will be done, the closest stars will appear on top of it, and you'll be able to go there seamlessly, yeah.

I see that you've still got images approved until the end of the month, so you're not so much starving, are you ? :) I'll make a submission as soon as the combat prototype 0.4 is released, hopefully in the coming week.

Looks amazing!

How does the building work on randomly generated terrain - does it "settle" into place? Have you considered having your artist make the space station out of modular pieces so you can generate slightly different ones each time :D
