The shield is to keep the various monsters on the planet out of the town. A cool thing about this will be that occasionaly a monster will wander in, and the various NPCs will run around in terror, until a guard comes to shoot it. As you can also notice, the town is also now part of the larger world map, rather than being a standalone map.
Now that brings me to another topic, the world map. The game takes place on an alien planet, more specifically on an island in that planet. Therefore, I have to make it so the thing is actually an island, surrounded with water tiles, and scattered with various objects (such as rocks, boulders, rivers, and stuff like that).
Now here is what I was thinking. Only a few key locations in the game will I specify exact locations. For the rest, I have the idea to randomly generate the island differently everytime you start a new game. The landscape will be different, along with how large the island is, and where monsters will appear.
Although it won't drastically improve gameplay, I figure it would be a good thing to do. Plus, it will be alot easier for me, not having to design the whole island myself[grin]
