ECMA Standard 334

A while back I was recommended the Standard ECMA-334
C# Language Specification
as a method of learning the C# language. People said it was quite an easy/informative read and from the first 50 or so pages I'd have to agree. Seems they've also just released the 4th (June '06) edition as well - the one I downloaded on the original recommendation was only the 3rd.

Also reminds me of a good entry in johnhattan's journal a while back about the C# vs Java standardisation. Which one is preferred by the OSS community? Which one is actually an "open" language? [rolleyes]

Curiously, Sun are acknowledged in the C# specification - I'm surprised they got involved given the direct competition with Java and how much money they make by licencing Java...

So, if it wasn't obvious enough... I'm sitting down to learn C# today. I figure it won't be too hard to get the basics sorted; then I can spend a bit of time making some simple programs and see where I get stuck.

What simple programs to write is proving to be a bit of a challenge for some strange reason. I want to get the language sorted before I dig too deeply into the .NET class libraries and other Windows-specific stuff.

Also, if I can be bothered I need to sort out an RSS reader. Been a lot of good blog/journal entries lately and its taking too much time to check them all out manually. Figure I might try the RSS reader in IE7...

Oh, and in final (bad) news. Looks like I'm gonna be completely out of the game for Windows Vista and Direct3D 10. Which is very disappointing

I really enjoyed working with D3D10 and it's gonna be annoying to wait until I can buy a new computer to work with it properly.

Downloaded 5456 earlier in the week, can't even *start* the installation process as it won't allow me to select a disk to install to - complains (as in previous builds) that my IDE controller is unsupported. Can't find ANY drivers online despite it being a generic on-board Intel chipset...

I lose my proper internet access end of next week, so I won't be able to download any updated builds until September at the earliest.

What is the model number of the intel chipset?

Have you submitted bugs and done the install surveys on connect, saying you can't install it at all?

That's really a huge bummer because I was excited about some of the DX10 stuff you would be working on, and I want to help you get going on Vista :-P

Wow I posted this at the same second as you. I guess you have priority in these things.

ASUS P4PE using an Intel 82801DB IDE controller (Intel 845 chipset I think)...

The only thing I haven't tried is flashing the motherboards BIOS - I've downloaded and messed with all the drivers I can find [oh]

Yup, but no joy so far. I'm collecting quite a nice list of very similar bug reports [lol]

Thanks - appreciated [smile]

Likewise - I really wanted to get on with some of my material system stuff as well as just get a good "feel" for the API.

I am almost tempted to buy a new computer early just to get around this. Problem is I wont have the money for that until late September...

Cheers,
Jack

I've seen some close posts/edits in the past, but never an exact match [oh]

Oh, and yes, of course I have priority [evil]

Yes I suggest flashing the motherboard bios to the latest version.

ftp://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/sock478/p4pe/p4pe1007.zip

That is the latest version off of Asus' site.

If Vista install doesn't see the drives, then just use the "I have drivers" option or whatever it is, and try it that way.

If I had a spare motherboard lying around, I would be more than willing to sacrifice it for ya so you can get started doing some really cool things... However I just donated all of my spare computer parts a few months back :-(

Yup, I guess that's what comes next. I'm just a bit dubious of such things given the risk of breaking my existing WinXP setup [oh]

Thats what I've already tried - its "load drivers" and I've pointed it at any/every file that might even be slightly relevant [headshake]

[wow] I'm impressed - thanks for the offer anyway!

Just make sure to do a backup. For me, updating bios is a painless procedure (just copy files over to a floppy, pop it in the drive and restart). As long as you know exactly which motherboard version you got (when I was looking at Asus' site there were a few variants to the P4PE model, so make sure you know which one you have. The link I gave was for the "vanilla" version... It didn't have any fancy letters tacked onto the end (example: P4PE-X).)

Let me know how it goes! :)

As you want to do D3D10 stuff you should stop trying to install 5456. It looks like they have broken compatibility with the current SDK again.
