The main thing to note is that you don't have to do things "correctly" from day one on your work. Too much perf work done up front is useless later on. True this perf work would hardly ever be useless but that's besides the point. You also don't have to do all your perf improvements at once. Incremental improvements work too. Don't do work for the sake of "perfection". Perfection is unattainable. Don't forget that.
Today was another perf related day around the renderer. When I started work on my engine I didn't think about perf at all. I wanted to get things working in a logical, efficient manner but concenrated on straight forward acting code and orthogonality above perf improvements. This meant using things like DrawPrimitiveUP to render my objects. It got things working but I knew it was temporary. The last update was changing things over to use VB's and batch things together. Today it was changing over to indexed drawing. I only saw about a 5% improvement on my development system but I'll be interested to see how things go on a slower machine.
