Take this down...

It occured to me last night as I wandered the streets of Ipswich at 2am, that I think best in two locations;
- in the bathroom
- walking

Now, the former isn't a problem as I'm normally out again soonish and back to some where where I can write down/note my ideas so that they don't get lost in the chaotic background noise which is my brain.

Walking however is another matter. If I'm walking somewhere it can be a good couple of hours before I get home and I'm able to make a decent set of notes of any ideas, at which point the moment is gone and my train of thought has derailed, often crashing through a load of innocent housing which was just sitting there minding its own bussiness.

The solution hit me last night shortly after this revalation; dictaphone!

However, being the child of technology that I am it would have to be a digital one, so I set about looking up stuff and this afternoon I wandered down the town to have a look. I found a few, however the ones in my price range either lacked PC intergration OR seemed to require software in order to get the stuff from the recorder, and given I run an x64 system I didn't want to chance the drivers.

In the end I've settled for an mp3 player which can record (making this my 4th mp3 player I own), it was about the same price but it doesn't suffer from software issues, just a matter of record and copy.

So, hopefully this good idea should mean that less of my good and/or insane ideas got lost... as to if this is a good or bad thing I'll leave for others to decide [grin]

I recently discovered the voice-memo feature on my cell phone; it's since become an absolutely invaluable tool. It's more convenient than lugging around a pad of paper (or even a PDA) and scribbling long and often complicated things down. Technology FTW.

You need a bigger bathroom you can walk around in. Double the ideas!

Just use a cellphone; mine has a very obvious voice recording feature and a meg of storage, which isn't much but perfect for quick jump start ideas -- "zombies," "fire," "eating the flesh of the living slow-cooked over the flames from a nearby campfire".

You know, normal stuff. [wink]

I have the exact problem. But usually I'm so lazy that I don't write ANYTHING down. Not even when I have the opportunity to. A dictaphone would be ideal, but I don't have the guts to talk to myself in public.

Fear..

I'd used my phone, but the voice notes stuff is a bit poo and its an expensive phone, so when wandering around at 2am I tend to travel light (me, keys, coat, sunglasses), so a small and light mp3 player which can record should work much better [smile]
