Red Squirrel Soldier

Here's another character that I'm planning on putting in the game. The Red Squirrel Solider is the basic enemy type that our penguin hero will face; in fact if I have to make cutbacks for 4E5 (assuming I even get it that far in time!) it might be the only enemy, albeit with a lot of different hats and weapon types.

I'm undecided about whether I should put some basic fake 3D shading on the cartoon characters in this game, like with Claws the Shadow Fox Assassin character I included a week or so ago, or whether to leave the characters flat like this little guy. It will depend a bit on what works with terrain and what I can animate (I'm still figuring out the best way to do that). In the end I'm not sure it will make much difference given the characters will be little sprites, so I might end up going with the flat cartoon look simply because it's so darn quick to do.

Yeah, the shading actually works for Ninja Marmot. I'd recommend it for SocialiSquirrel.

Yes, it does look a bit better. I'll do a second version to see what it looks like. When I was playing around with squirrel shading last time I couldn't get the muzzle to work right (due to the cartoon deformation, I guess).
