I decided to make a death animation:


I went with the standard, "Character looks at you as if to tell you that you're a n00b" animation. I had to do some annoying hacking at my jump code to get the little effect you see in such games as mario. The effect works quite well, though.

So, I decided on, what I consider to be, a better alternative to ladders in the game. Now, it might just sound like I'm being lazy (and that's part of it), but I think the alternative will be more fun than climbing a ladder. Basically, I'm going to make a spring board, like in several Sonic games, that when stepped on will propel you really high up. I think that will be more fun to use than a ladder(not to mention easier to program[grin]).

Springs would be MUCH better than ladders. Ladders always take to long to climb.

Yep, that's exactly what I was thinking. Ladders would have been incredibly hard to program given my current code, where spring boards would be easier to program and more fun.

I dunno, I feel very indifferent about ladders. On one hand, they're a pain to implement (such as jumping onto a ladder and pressing the up button should turn off gravity and halt the jump state, etc). Though I do like climbing a really high ladder, and then facing a really deadly series of moving platforms to get to some stable ground.

I don't know, maybe I'm one of those kind of people that like doing impossible platforming. :) I would implement the spring boards anyway though, because sonic is cool.

Well, there was the one challange I wanted to do with ladders, where the player tries to climb while getting shot at. I remember a challange like that from Megaman 1. I just prefer spring boards, though.

definately agree with obsidian in terms of gameplay, but from a programming perspective i can say that ya it'd probably be pretty difficult :)
