I've played all but Dragon Quest, and Pokemon. My favorite out of that list has to be The Legend of Zelda, with Final Fantasy coming in second.

Pretty interesting. Source: Forbes.com

Other than that, I've been messing with NSIS to use for my Installation of Breakout Returns. Very clean and simple to use installation system.

I've played them all except Pokemon, Lineage, and Halo. Considering the Lineage and Dragon Quest haven't been that big in North America/Europe they've obviously sold very well in Asia.

Couple thoughts, Mario has been in a lot of games - so it's somewhat unfair to the rest of the games. Second, it isn't really fair to games like World of Warcraft that have an online subscription model. Yeah WoW has only sold something like 5 million copies (i'm making that number up, it's probably higher), but it also has a monthly subscription fee that it's continually collecting. I'd be curious to see a list of revenue generated by game series rather than flat out sales.

Mario sure has sold a lot of copies. But, it wouldn't be fair to neglect their sales because they have a huge brand extension. It is fair game to everybody on the list to extend.

It would be interesting to catch a revenue perspective on all of these. Though, online play is a different monster than the rest. You couldn't even put a online game side by side with a non-online game (revenue wise). It wouldn't be morally right. ;) As far as box sales, which average the same, that’s perfectly fine to compare.

I think Crash Bandicoot is missing off that list. It has sold a ridiculous amount og copies over the course of its lifetime even though you wouldn't think it. Very big in Japan.

I've played them all.

I pity those that haven't played pokemon. They're some of the best RPGs I've ever played.

I suspect Dragon Quest/Warrior's numbers are inflated. They used to give it away free if you bought a subscription to Nintendo Power, which every kid I knew did. It was rather shit.

Later games in the series were hyperpopular in Japan, however, so much so that the Parliament in Japan (they call it the Diet) forbid a Dragon Quest game to be released on a school/work day (e.g. any day other than Sunday or a holiday) because the Japanese economy ground to a halt and schools emptied when a new DQ was released. I'm surprised how low* the numbers are.

Does the Forbes report count the American sales of DQ (considering it was released under a different name)? Sequels?

* Low in this case means 'low for a cultural phenomenon inspiring Dragon Quest ballet and musicals'. I'd kill for even one million downloads of one of my games.
