Breakout Returns Released!

This would have been posted awhile ago if it wasn't for gamedev.net webservice not liking my upload. However, It's official! The big feat has been overcome and my very first solo gaming project came through.

Breakout Returns offers truly unique game play from that of the classic arcade original that was released back in 1976. Graphics have come a long way since the release of the original and while this version does not have the best graphics, it is definitely eye pleasing ( I think so anyway ;) ).

The Game play Rules that you need to know.
You have 2 Lives...
You have 7 Levels...
And you have 7 Minutes to destroy as many blocks as you possibly can.

There are no visual timers, but, there is 1 audio cue that your time is running short. If you do not have sound, you are already hurt. This cue sounds when you have 10 seconds left on the level.

There are two modes in Breakout Returns that function with the same rule set, practice and challenge. Practice mode will allow you to select any level to get familiar with or to just mess around without having to worry about your score. Challenge mode is where it all comes down. You have 1 minute per level (7 Levels) to go on a block rampage! Attempt to beat your prior scores or your brother/sisters score.

Some other things to know... The final power up guide.

Alright, enough gab. Grab it now: Download Breakout Returns V.1.0

If you don't have the Microsoft Redistribution Files (If you get the '.. application failed to start' error, Download it here

Finally!

Great work. I haven't had a chance to play it too much, but here's a couple of things I noticed:
* The keys are a bit touchy. If I press both left/right together, then release one direction, the paddle remains stuck until I release both keys and re-press a direction. Not a huge issue, but I'm a lazy key-presser [smile].
* For some reason during the fourth level in Challenge mode, the ball passed straight through the paddle and ended my game (not crashed, just game over).
* I had a little bit of slow-down during 'Fog'. I'm not sure if that was intentional though.
* Occasionally the ball will bounce off an invisible block about half-way up the left side of the screen (when there are no blocks nearby). This has happened twice.

It's very well done, and I really like the way it fades between levels in Challenge mode. Good job.

Haha. I'm glad you got a kick out of it and I'm sorry it took so long to finally get off of my hands. Time has been pretty hectic with the preperation of school starting soon.

Thanks a lot for bringing up your thoughts. The initial way I designed the input system made it extremely buggy, so I had to pretty much do a lot of restrictions or redesign the whole input system. I didn't want to spend a whole lot of time on the game so I just decided that it would be okay to officially have only one button down at a time. It takes a few plays to get used to, but after that you should be well on your way. :)

The fly-thru-paddle was another issue that revolved from inexperience with collision detection and high flying objects. Sorry about that!

The fog slow down is intentional. I decided that since I'm blocking the vision that It would just be crude to keep the ball going incredibly fast.

It may just be the blame of poor collision detection on the wall. I know there were a few times that I had played and the ball hit the left wall while deflecting in the wrong direction.

Other than that, thanks a lot for giving it a shot and providing feedback!

Take Care,
-Dave

I love it. Really nicely done and polished. I only noticed one thing while playing. At the beginning of a round, when you first shoot the ball up it goes straight up and down continuously if you don't move the paddle. (Actually, as long as the paddle isn't moving when the ball touches it, it'll continue to go up and down.)

Ah yes. I decided to leave it as simple as that. If you choose to bounce the ball up and down (which, probably isnt advised), have at it. :) But, using it to your advantage to control the game to gain a high score, is a valuable asset.

I didn't want to be to cruel with the inclusion of a time limit. If it was more a free form game, I would add more dynamic reactions.

I'm glad you liked it and that you took a moment to drop by to provide feedback! Thank You!

Just got a chance to give it a bit more play. And yes, I did get used to the way the keys worked [smile].

I thoroughly enjoyed the Challenge mode. You got the difficulty level spot-on. I only managed a score of 4107 so far, but I'll definitely see how high I can get it (it beats doing work).

I'm glad you like it! Yeah, I've actually had some time to just sit and -just play- it without worrying about anything, my top score is currently at 4795.

Regards,
-Dave
