So, I started work on some of the status effects items. The only one I've got working is the speed up, and it doesn't work properly. It screws up the scrolling and collision, so I have to fix both. Getting the power up to work in water was a pain too, and I'm not even sure it works there either.

Speaking of water, the alpha blended water graphics are still slowing down the game fullscreen. I tried switching to using software only surfaces, with no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Alpha blending is slow in software, no matter how you look at it. (SDL does alpha in software irregardless of surface type, to my knowledge). How about making water via a dithered sprite instead? I believe the elderly console systems (like the Sonic series) used some palette magic to get the transparent-water-ish effect to a good degree of success.

Well, I guess I might have to do away with the alpha blending after all. Oh well, like you said, there are other ways to create nice looking water.
