Right back where I started again

Great, after much arsing around and searching through all the (limited) docs, some one on IRC tells me that the 'corrupt' version string is in fact perfectly legit and is actually a whole bunch of japanease characters. Apparently no-one ever thought to mention this *anywhere*.

I've decided that I'm going to ditch the kernel upgrade to 2.6 as I don't really see any advantage to it, and stick with the default distro install. This has the advantage of 1. working and 2. not requiring me to jump though lots of obscure kenel patching hoops. So next step is to wipe it again, stick the distro on it again and then I can actually make a start on setting up a subversion repository and making it accessable from outside my LAN.
