Space Monkies!

Space monkies is a fast action game done in 3 days, with me programming and a bunch of very cool artists doing the art.

You and a whole bunch of other monkeys have been fired into space to test the a space station. Unfortunatly eveyone else has gone nuts and you've got to try and stay alive by killing the evil monkeys and capturing the bananas. Gameplay is based on Smash TV, but unfortunately I didn't have time to add the ridiculous bonus items (or a whole bunch of other features).

Move around the screen shooting the evil monkeys, touching an evil monkey will get you killed. When killed you'll respawn in the center with 3 seconds of invunerability. Grab the banana robot for a big points bonus. Both players get four lives, and the winner is the one with most points when both players have run out of lives.

Controls
Player 1: WASD for movement, IJKL for shooting. HUD on left.
Player 2: Cursor/arrow keys for movement, numpad 8456 for shooting. HUD on right.

Windows version:
Download Space Monkies. You should be able to unzip to whereever you want, then just run the exe.

Non-windows version:
Space Monkies webstart link. Should work on Mac, Linux and Windows.

Enjoy!

Hello,

Just downloading now, this looks really cool. I've always loved the idea of making a game with a really strict time limit - it seems like a fantastic way to get straight to the essence of the gameplay.

Looking forward to playing now... :)

After a bit of a play I can say it's certainly tough - I'll have another go with a mate later on and see if the 2 of us can't hold back the monkey horde for longer :).

Really nice presentation for a 3 day game, and everything ran smoothly. Only minor negative comment is the lack of audio (or at least it wasn't working on my box), but a bit of Quarashi's Jinx in the background went well :)

Very ace.

Initial webstart version. Currently untested as I only have a windows machine here, so if it doesn't work come and gripe about it here and I'll see what I can do.

I swear, whenever I make a game as webstart I get lots of complaints like "WTF do I do with this crazy jnlp file". Now I try and make things easier with a native .exe and a bundled JRE and all the non-windows people come out of the woodwork. Where were you people before eh?

Busy playing your game, obviously. [wink]

It's downloading now. If you don't hear from me again, it exploded and I'm probably dead.

Edit: I like it, though one of my monkey players kept getting slaughtered as I don't have a number pad on my laptop.

Very, very excellent art. Smooth animation, excellent perspective. It looks outstanding. With a little more polish on the gameplay, you could sell this easily.

It also took awhile to load the game after picking the new game option from the menu; maybe you should have a little loading bar or something to show that stuff is happening.

Also, maybe I'm ignornant, but a single player mode would be really nice.

I'm going to add a single-player mode it think - they'll also have half as many monkeys to shoot so it'll make it a bit easier too.

Yeah, the art is awesome - especially considering how fast it was made.

Oddly the webstart version takes about four times longer to load than the exe version - which is odd since the exe version isn't really any different, it's just a native stub which launches the JRE. But a 'loading' text might be a good idea.
