Still here

Yep, I'm still still here. I found a way to make some much-needed improvements to the Mac games. Should be ready early next week. The Mac games will now be as good as the Windows ones, which was something that was bothering me.

G'bye to EDI's journal. To be honest, our journals are getting pretty sad. They're dang-near impossible to read because of all of the 500 errors.

Here's a fix for the developer journals that could be implemented quickly. . .

1. Give all of the journal owners a way to export their journal content in an XML format that can be imported by blog software (i.e. blogger)

2. Give all gdnet+ members a field in the control panel to put a link to their own RSS feeds, be it from blogger or from a feed on their personal site.

3. Convert the Journals page to a blog aggregator like fullasagoog.com

There. All gdnet+ members could easily move their content to a more reliable back-end (blogger, movable type, etc). They then link 'em back to gamedev. And gamedev displays the journals in a better format.

That also gives people with existing journals a way to list 'em on gamedev, so they'll be more likely to get gdnet+ subscriptions just for the extra exposure.

Everybody wins.

I would guess that 50% of the time when I go to this blog I get an error.

The irony is when I posted this entry I got the error :-)

I've had some issues with the error, but not enough to dis-satisfy me. Although I don't normally post half as often as some of you people so there's that to consider as well. I've often looked at the blogs space here and wished we had something more for it - we have a lot of blogs getting updated on a daily basis (not necessarily individually, I mean everyday we get a bunch of updates). I see much opportunity for growth here. Once we get some higher-level issues taken care of I'd sure like to look more into your suggestions John.

Hopefully by then it won't be too late

1. Yes.

2. Yes. Would be nice to link my own RSS feed.

3. Don't really care.

I get errors all the time myself, mostly when I look at the comments. Great ideas, I hope they're implemented.

Only problem with that scheme is that blogger doesn't have any kind of import :(

On the plus side, blogger has a rich text editor, so if you cut-n-paste from your journal, it keeps all of the formatting intact (including links).

Just experimenting, I made up thecodezone.blogspot.com. I was able to move a year's worth of entries pretty quickly.

Dunno what'll happen with the journals. Far as I know, there are no plans for changes on the docket.
