My parents got me a DS the other day, along with the game Children of Mana (it's a Christmas present.) I like the DS other than the buttons are backwards (B, A, Y, X) when compared with the Dreamcast and XBox (which are A, B, X, Y). They're even backwards when compared to the PS2 controller (the buttons' functionality is backwards.) Also, I don't understand why you can't play gameboy and gameboy color games on it.

I ordered an av cable for my Dreamcast a few days ago and received it yesterday. All of my games still work and I still have my memory cards, so I'll have some fun with that when I get a chance (especially Seventh Cross, Sonic Shuffle, and Virtua Tennis.) Now I need to pick up a copy of Speed Devil.

I also busted out a couple more of my older systems. My SNES still works as does my NES. Luckily Super Punch-Out and Bart's Nightmare still work great. My Atari 2600 works perfectly still. I'll test the 64 once I find the power cord lol. I plan on picking up a copy of Contra 3 for the SNES and Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the 64. I also need to get a copy of Super Mario Brothers 3 for the NES.

GIGANTOR!

I watched an episode of Gigantor last night; 30 minutes of my life that I can never get back. The animation looked like 4 frames, the fighting scene consisted of 4 different scenes repeated randomly over and over, the dialogue was absolutely horrific, and overall it just didn't make sense. Here's a breakdown of last night's episode:

Doctor shows up at kids house
Kid lets doctor in
Doctor invites kid to go to a zoo
Kid agrees and goes
Shot of doctor going around the corner on 2 wheels (WTF!?)
Show up at zoo
Doctor's friend, the zoo-keeper whines about how much animals cost
Zoo-keeper mentions far off Bongo Bongo that said he could have all the animals he wanted
Kid suggests capturing them with Gigantor
They fly to Bongo Bongo
They go out and capture like 6 elephants
They find some giraffes, but are called back because of a sick boy
The boy has some disease and only a far off city has the cure
Kid takes Gigantor to get the cure
The Ping Pangians attack Bongo Bongo
Some shoosting goes on
More shoosting
continue for about 10 minutes, intermittently show a shot of the dying-kid's mom crying
They arrive and retrieve the serum
They set off to return
Bongo Bongo runs out of ammunition
The Doctor says there's "no more time" for the kid
Gigantor and the kid return with the serum, just in time
Gigantor mutilates the Ping Pangians, flying into truck loads of soldiers
The Ping Pangians retreat, Gigantor follows for a moment, mutilating more
Everybody returns home with "the animals they've already caught", meaning like 6 elephants
Fin

Horrible, horrible show. I'm really glad it's only on at 5:30 in the morning. Also, what's up with Gigantor not having a neck? He flies like superman, but looking straight down.

GameDev News

Not much at the moment, I'm finishing up the node system for the editor tonight and then I'll be back to working on a couple projects at a time.

Also, MalykAI2 won't be a Megaman style game. It will follow the style of a different game and hopefully have multiplayer action.

Finally, I've started mapping out everything for my "world." Pretty much every story I've written over the past 6 years have resided in a single world, with the same gods, races, etc, so I've decided to map it down and expand on it as I design my different games. Obviously not every game I do will make use of it, but most of my RPGs will.

Anyway, I've only got a few hours left to finish this editor, so I'm off to do that.

I've got a fairly simple reason why the DS can't play Gameboy (Color) games: IT DOESN'T HAVE A PORT CAPABLE OF ACCEPTING THEM.

I keed, I keed. It should probably have one.

The GBA had to emulate GBC and GB games. I've always assumed they just couldn't fit it in. The DS is pretty cramped.

And, isn't Gigantor like a million years old? Recycling animation was common back 'in the day'. They probably used that same driving scene every time they drove somewhere.

Good point on the GBC and GB games. I guess I was thinking hierarchically (i.e. the DS emulates the GBA, which in turn emulated the GBC and GB.)

As for Gigantor, yea it's from like the 70s or 80s I think. But, all of the graphical stuff aside, it still was a horrible show. The dialog was crap and the episode didn't make sense, especially the end (they went to get animals for the zoo and they returned with a grand total of like 5 elephants.)

<edit>I didn't just decide this from one episode, I've watched 3 now and they all have the same problems.</edit>
