Membrane Massacre :: Of Additions and Fixes

A huge thanks to everyone who gave feedback; good and bad! Thanks to the given suggestions and bug reports, I've updated the game to a hopefully improved form. Here's what's new:

  • Game no longer (sometimes) randomly jumps to the end of the game.
  • Ship should no longer get stuck on small clusters of pixels.
  • The laser weapon now appears on the radar.
  • The Boss has a much larger radar blip now.
  • Radar indicators for enemies eating AND splitting.
  • Enemies visibly darken before they split.
  • Enemies produce a cool new sound before splitting.
  • Sound effects on title screen now play properly.
  • Boss now starts as idle at the middle of the stage, rather than moving towards you a bit at first.
  • Laser beam now leaves a fading trail. Looks cool.
  • Freeze-Count now resets on player death.

More than enough to go around. Although I asked all of you nice folks to try out the game yesterday, I must now ever-so-politely ask again. It's really important to me that all of the bugs get rooted out! :)

If you've played before, give it another go, even if it's just to see the cool new laser effect. If you haven't played, well, prepare to have some fun!

Woohoo! I win!

Great job!

Also, a little trick: Use the radar to aim your laser at enemies off your screen. Works really well :D

It's amazing what you can make in ~14 days :)

Hopedagger, that is awesome. How the hell did you get the bacteria things to deform like that when you hit them? Amazing. Puts all my humble efforts to shame.

Absolutley brilliant!

The difficulty is perfect, the last level took me so long to complete... it just seemed like an unwinnable battle until I realised that most of the remaining enemies were all in the corner... a minute with the laser and some missiles and the end suddenly seemed in sight. The boss was brilliant as well!

The only complaints I had were...

  1. I ended up with tons of enemies in the corner on top of each other so it just looked like one

  2. When they were in the top right hand corner I couldn't see them as the map was blocking them... maybe make the map slightly transparent.

Apart from that it was a great game and a great achievement for 14 days work! Do we get to play the other guys game so we can decide who's was better???

Again, very nice. Im liking the improvements.

Not trying to complain, but 2 things you may want to look at:

1) I got stuck inside the big boss more than once. More than a bit annoying.

2) Sometimes all the cells bunch together so its hard to tell how many there are. I keep shooting and thees always another 1 or 2 underneath.

But its still a great game, good work. I can't believe its the product of just 2 weeks work.

I plan on going into that in the post-mortem. It's much much easier than you think; I actually used the same sort of velocity-based math you used in Orc. :)

Don't be silly, EC. :P

Thanks! And thanks very much for playing! It's great to see a new face on the comments page. :)

I'm guilty there. Some enemies go into 'flee AI' where they run from the player. Unfortunately this usually leads (many of) them to the corners. I'll see if I can correct this.

I'm also guilty of knowingly having this. :) I'm using software rendering (via Allegro) so transparency would just be too computationally expensive. But I'll see if I can do something to keep this from being a problem.

I'll definitely put up a link to splattergnome's game when he's completed!

This is intentional. He's supposed to eat you, hehe. (Hint: If you use a freeze bomb while inside of him, you can actually push your way back out!)

Yes, I agree, that's annoying. I really really wanted to do cell-to-cell collisions, but the game ended up slowing down too much. If I can think of a solution, I'll be sure to implement it.

Thanks so much for the feedback. :)

Great stuff! All of the issues you folks mentioned (rip-off and MK) have now been fixed up. Hopefully it's all ready for a public release and to be done with all of this. :)

Great job HopeDagger! I love the new laser.

I had a little bug though, after I beat the final boss I was at -8 enemies left and it didn't show the "congrats" screen.

Other than that, my only complaint is that you don't seem to take the UI into consideration, which causes part of the map to not be see-able (the very top of the map and the very bottom.) Not really a problem, but I've missed a few enemies that were hiding in the corners.

Again, great job! I'm really looking forward to the postmortem.

That. Was Awesome. I like it when you do competitions, they go ever so well! Perhaps some more difficult levels?
