No images for this journal entry (I can already here the 'back' buttons being clicked [headshake]) as I'm just doing writing for the book. Maybe have some more pictures later today or tomorrow.

Just got an email through from the Windows Beta Team informing them that my Windows Vista RTM Ultimate Edition product key is available. Yay.

Anyone who filed one or more bug during the Vista beta gets a downloadable copy of 32bit and 64bit Vista with a key for Ultimate edition. Only two conditions being that its download-only and that its a single-activation key (which I assume means I have to use either 32bit or 64bit, not both).

I think I can also get a few more keys via my MSDN subscriptions, but technically they're for development and testing purposes only. But I only use Vista on my devbox anyway so I suppose thats a moot point...

anyway, got me thinking about how much disk space I'm using to store older versions of Vista [lol]

5231 (x86) - 2.86gb
5270 (x86 staged) - 1.9gb
5270 (x86) - 1.97gb
5308 (x86) - 2.71gb
5342 (x86) - 2.79gb
5365 (x86) - 3.02gb
5381 (x86 checked) - 3.26gb
5381 (x86) - 2.24gb
5384 (x86) - 3.12gb
5456 (x86) - 2.51gb
5472 (x86) - 2.56gb
5536 (x86) - 2.58gb
5600 (x64) - 3.59gb
6000 (x86) - 2.49gb
6000 (x64) - 3.53gb

A mere 41.13 Gigabytes of space on my disk [wow].

From here onwards I shall use this as an example of why having absolutely huge HDD's is not necessarily a good thing - it just allows you to collect even more rubbish you don't really need [lol]

Sure that is a lot of wasted space. But just think of how easy it will be to find space when you're running low on space and need to delete stuff. [wink]

What's depressing for me is that even in RTM they still haven't fixed the BSOD crash on install for me. :(

I hope they can push out an update in the installer so I can install. It's either that, or I have to buy new hardware cause I don't know which piece is screwing up Vista.

*Edit* Also, did you get the free copy of Office 2007 from powertogether.com ?

Just a funny fact I learned about that, a lot of people went on there, and are going to be getting both Vista and Office 2007... What they don't realize is that merchandise is > $600 so they have to fill out IRS tax forms and pay taxes on those products! Thus, if you got both, they technically aren't "free" because you make up for it with taxes. Lucky for me, I only got Office 2007.

I might still have some of the Vista version DVDs around (though I think I threw most away), but I kept deleting old versions as I downloaded new ones. What I do have extras of is old ATI drivers. But they're much smaller.

As for Vista, I only downloaded the x64 version, though I've been told that the x86 version works better. I haven't used it since I installed it, though the release of the December SDK might prompt me to get back to Vista. Though I'd really love a GeForce 8800 to go with that.

Iced_Eagle, MSDN includes one Office license for general use. Also, anyone with an MSDN subscription couldn't ask for anything from powertogether.com.

Excess... I downloaded the lastest Vista (x86 debug build) last night, I'll have to install it on my spare PC and have another play with it...

I've got a little under 300gb of storage across all my disks - I could have around 500gb but I chose to set up RAID-1 with two of the 200gb drives. It's slowly starting to fill up, but I've probably got a fair way to go before I need to aggressively cull my back-catalog of rubbish [grin]

That sucks [headshake] It seems that some older motherboard chipsets tripped up the installer during the beta, so its possible that you've hit one of those. Wasn't a lot MS could do about it (apparently) so it's down to the chipset manufacturers to produce newer Vista-compatible drivers. Which is unlikely.

Nope, from the quick look I had you needed to be a US citizen/resident to claim.

That whole tax thing is funny - serves the greedy people right I reckon [lol]

This is quite convenient - I just went over to MSDN downloads and queued up every Vista/Office product and left it downloading all day [grin]

Really? Any more info on this?

I've got an Athlon 64 CPU, so I just assumed that x64 would be better...

You downloaded a checked debug build?! Madness...

Cheers,

Like with XP, "better" is a matter of drivers and application compatibility. When it does work, x64 might be faster.
