So the December SDK has been released (SDK, runtime and symbols).

The release notes say this SDK is compatible with Vista RTM which was always expected, but nice to see confirmed.

I downloaded copies of Vista x64 and Office 2007 after they came out but they've just been sitting around doing nothing - I didn't want to compromise my stable(ish) RC1 setup.

So, once I've done the xmas shopping today I'll be sitting staring at progress bars whilst I rebuild my Vista test machine.

Then all that remains is buying a GeForce 8800 and acquiring suitable drivers. Last I heard was that the drivers would be out for late December. I have to admit that if the rumours of ATI's R600 appearing in (late) January are true then it might well be worth hanging on - Nvidia lost the opportunity to get a big lead as far as I'm concerned.

So who here saw that thing about the HLSL compiler not being optimized for D3D9 SM targets and not having support for PS1.x at all anymore?

This was discussed on DIRECTXDEV, and also got brought up in the IRC channels. There are a number of work-arounds, but they pretty much all require you to special-case for PS1.1 hardware, or not support them completely.

I havn't been able to test it at all yet, but I'm hoping it'll at least provide something in return for losing SM1 support. There sure are some things in can improve over the old compiler.

I am currently doing the same job. Hopefully everything will work tomorrow

Good luck on the Vista re-build :)

Will Vista be running on your main machine (perhaps dual-boot with XP?) or will it just be on a test machine for now?

About nVidia, they did break some ground with their card... Not huge though I agree. I haven't been impressed with ATI's track record lately, but I have faith that they will be able to come up with a decent competitor... We'll see and hope that they don't make any dumb decisions (not putting SM3.0 on x800 series of cards for example!!! I think that was just a horrible mistake.)

nVidia does have a head-start though... By the time ATI comes out with their card next year, nVidia will be close to releasing another version of their card with some improvements, probably edging out ATI...

Can't wait to see how it will turn out :)
