Bushes

So the first screen of the first level is done.

The bushes are just eye-candy, but between them and the stuff in the distance, they are making the levels feel a bit more full.

I just need to implement something so that enemies don't start moving until either they are first drawn on screen or when you pass certain checkpoints.

I was reading Sir Sapo's journal about Angels 22 earlier and it has got me thinking about a scripting system for Udo. Be nice if activating enemies could be handled by a script system really.

Worth thinking about.

Just had another idea - bush monsters that hide in the bushes and jump out when you get close to the bushes they are hiding in.

An emphatic "yes"! A nice little (subtle) bush-rustling animation every now and then would be another great added touch to it. [smile]

Man, that would be so cool. Nightmare to animate I expect, but it would definatley be worth it.

You'll get a "bush rustling credit" in the game if I successfully implement that. You can put it on your resume when applying for jobs. [grin]

[EDIT] Bush rustling is working. Didn't need animation in the end - just rotate the bush back and forward by a very small angle and it looks really good. I figure that the bush monster bursting out can be done using the existing starburst system with a spinning leaf particle so really just the bush monster to draw and animate.

Looking great! [smile]

Bush monsters sound like a good idea, but I'd second adding clues as to their existence, otherwise it might be a bit cheap.

I take back what I said about them spikes. By now, your art skills have improved way beyond my vast knowledge of the MS Paint paintbrush tool ;-). I'd like to see leaves popping from the bush, to make things more vivid (or water sparkling up when a fish enters or leaves the volume).

Yeah - I have thought about water particle effects as it would be nice, but I'm not sure it will make it into this game. Water is not a big feature really - it is just a decoration to make pits in the bottom of the level look a bit more interesting.
