Given that the Digipro is 1/5 the price of the equivalent Wacom tablet, I wasn't expecting the top of the line, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's pen-only (no mouse), but I wasn't planning to part with my MS mouse anyway. Mind you, it is a cheapo no-name Chinese tablet with a single page of instructions and a CD with drivers and a couple of trial-version paint programs.
Biggest problem was the lack of Vista drivers. I plugged in the tablet and Vista immediately recognized it as a HID device (i.e. a mouse). All of the buttons and such were working fine, but the pressure-sensitivity wasn't working, as standard mice don't support pressure sensitivity. I needed a pen-driver, but the included CD didn't include Vista drivers, just 98/ME/2000/XP and OSX.
And, of course, there was no web-address anywhere to check for updates. No joy.
As I was resigning myself to not having a pressure-sensitive tablet, I checked the driver's INF file. There I saw the phrase "UC-Logic Tablet" mentioned a few dozen times. A quick google for "UC-Logic" not only found me a site featuring several tablets that looked suspiciously like mine (only with more roundy corners and a nicer paint-job), but a newly-updated driver that supported Vista!
And sure enough, the UC-Logic driver worked like a charm. Happy happy.
Now I just have to wait for my Adobe CS3 stuff to arrive. According to Adobe it's shipping on the 16th.
Three great things if you have a young girl in your life. Girls tend to fear nonconformity, and here are some things I found that help foster a healthy self-image. . .
"Growing Up Creepie" - It's a cartoon on the Discovery Channel about a baby who was left on the doorstep of an abandoned house and was raised by bugs. The bugs eventually sent her to school, but the girl (Creepie Creature) is still a mite odd. I rather like it because she doesn't really work to be popular. Some girls ignore her, but some are her friends, and she's cool with that.
"Franny K Stein" - This is a series of kids "Chapter Books", much in the same vein as Captain Underpants. It's about a little girl who's a mad scientist and her adventures. The stories are even more absurd than "Growing Up Creepie", but it's good to see another girl who doesn't mind being different.
"Cinder Edna" - This is a great kids' book that not only promotes self-reliance but also pokes fun at fairytale princesses (who are, for the most part, a pathetic lot). Edna is Cinderella's neighbor, and she suffers from similar problems to Cinderella, but Edna solves her own problems rather than just waiting for her problems to be solved by fairy godmothers and princes. It's got a great sense of humor, and the illustrations are priceless.
