Building your own MMORPG

Dear Diary,

Today I answered a forum post about "How do I build my own MMORPG" for the 1,234,567,890th time. Given the mathematical irony of that, me thinks it may be time to just "do the dew" and run a workshop on "How Do I Develop My Own MMORPG (Miniature Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game)."

That way, any time someone posts: "How do I make a MMO?" (tm) thread, we'll have somewhere to send them.

Granted it's not exactly the same, but I think that the author of CircleMUD put it best:

"If you're already an old hand at playing MUDs and you've decided you want to start one of your own, here's my advice: take a valium, lie down, and hide in a dark closet until the desire goes away."

haha...very nice!

Probably the best advice I've gotten in a while. But then there's the masochistic side of myself. (Being a Gemini sucks sometimes).

See This Post in For Beginners to see what I mean.

Cheers!

That's.... <punches calculator>... just crazy enough to work! [disturbed]

Best of luck, though -- I hope it's met with the same success as the C++ Workshop and that, a year from now, the MMO market will be flooded with its offerings.

This seems like a long, painful and pointless workshop.

On the plus side, you won't have to do any more than the first lesson before they all quit or switch programming languages indefinitely.

Wow...I've gotten mixed responses from people...but none yet have called it pointless. Is it that you dont see the value to the GD.net community, or that the community doesn't care enough to make it worth the effort?

I think Ravuya is referring to the large quantity of 'developers' who essentially want to make an MMORPG, but don't actually want to go through the effort of really making one.
