Big Ideas...

Well this is good and bad news I suppose...

Bad news first...I'm going to delay the BETA by another 2 months, so [5 months from now].

Now for the good news...

With the whole "birth" of the Urban Empires brand recently I've had some good ideas. Currently there is a maximum of 6 people allowed per server. I'm going to change this to allow up to 18 people per server [though only 6 gangs at once]...this could mean 2 gangs of 9 battling, or 6 3-man gangs going at eachother.

The other big idea is to really integrate support for custom / user created clans [ie: gangs]. Gangs would be able to challange eachother to battles which would affect global standings [keep in mind there are already global personal stats for each player]. Letting the gang upload their own custom .jpg to represent their gang in-game / on the website...and really just going all out to foster an active community.

I'm currently looking at a 2.5 page to-do list [size 10 font] and hitting the most recent BETA date was un-reasonable. Since this is my first project, just throwing something out there, and patching it up later isn't an option, though some companies do it *cough*.

My goal is to deliver the best product I possibly can, if that means a 3-4 year dev cycle...then so be it. I'm really going to shoot for the moon on this one, and hopefully allowing 18 players per server will take the game to a whole new level.

I'm not sure how "open" I should be with my beta/release schedule but lets just say things have been pushed back an additional 3 months from where they were yesterday.

Also my "doc" has been telling me to stop the 30+ hour work sprint, 6 hour sleep, 30+ hour work sprint....repeat....cycle I've been in...and this will give me more breathing room, and will ultimatly provide a better product, and keep me sane for future games.

To those waiting to play the game...I'll try to release more screens/vids...as long as I beat the GTA IV PC port to market I should be ok :-D

As another side note Josh [AKA Salsa] has been working on some potential box designs/logos for the game...I'm really speechless considering these are the first Mock-ups he sent me.

*As a note my publisher has also created some mock-up box designs but I'm not going to display those publically since I'm not sure if they'd want that.

So yea, thoughts, comments? etc? Lay them on me.

P.S. I recently updated my site's mug-shot...have a gander...

Just make sure the game is fun to play with only two or three players. Because chances are that there won't be so many people playing your game and if there never are enough players online to play a good game then you'll alienate the rest of them. Basically this means: create a good singleplayer mode if you're capable of doing so and make sure a game is plenty of fun regardless of the number of players.

Atually since it's going to be in Best Buy, Gamestop, EB Games, etc...I'm worried about TOO many players for my infastructure at least. Either way the game is playable with as few as 2 people...each controlling their own gang.

With multiple players > 6 there is a rank system...Boss, Luitenent, then everyone else will be soldiers. It actually works out perfectly...I can't wait :-D More details to come, but that is a very good point you raised.

Besides single player / offline is just for practice, so you don't get totally pwned by people like me :-p

Also ~30,000 people in the open-beta...I'm sure that will bring my servers to their knees.

The logo's look nice, I can't decide which color combination is the best though. Something different: ages ago, you asked here for a model of a statue, does that request still hold? (I can't promise anything, but it would be a honor if I can create something that would make it into the game. And with abstract art, nothing can go wrong, can it? ;))

Those mock-ups are work-in-progresses, I'm sure he'll have some crazy shit next round...

But yea man that'd be sweet if you could make a statue. I created 5 rings of torii [?] and threw them on a pedestal...it looks alright.

I really want something along the lines of -

from the soft-edged demo here on gamedev....

Triangle count <= 1000
1 512x512 texture would be super :-D

And I'll add it into a new plaza...hell if you wanted to make a square plaza for the game centered around the statue you could go for that. Triangle count for that would be < 4000 with a 1024^2 texture [including statue].

I hate to say this, but this recent news post is making this game seem reminiscent of other games that have failed in the past. Two of the biggest mistakes game studios make is delaying delaying and also delaying more because of graphics. I would hate to see this happen to your game. Making people wait so long to get it makes them lose interest because other games come out that are similar and better. So your game never becomes the "first" to do whatever it is it does. That's just my opinion though. I would definitely quit worrying about the graphics and focus on getting the game out. The game won't be fun to play if you have to have some expensive graphics card to play it and have it look good.

Errrmmmm...the graphics are the one part of the game that are finished...actually delaying will mean that a larger portion of the public will have hardware capable of running the game on 'High'.

All the 'delays' are because of totally new gameplay features I want to add, so I'm not sure where you got that from lol, you sure you read the right journal entry?!?!

The graphics engine / art is finished ['cept for a few new buildings, etc.] But yea...I'm not delaying because of anything even remotely related to the graphics.

Btw. where does it say anywhere in that entry that I'm delaying because of graphics?!?!

You gotta have a little more faith in me :-) Just watch and learn my friend. All I can say is trust me, and I will finish this game over my dead body if necessary.

I've got faith in you and your project [smile]

But you mention GTA4 - you don't want to get too close to that or it'll steal all your thunder! I doubt many games could go head-to-head with the release of a GTA game [oh]

Exactly what Jack said.
I've been watching the progress you've been making since I can't even remember how far back. The work you've been doing on this is absolutely breathtaking. If this delay means that I'd be able to play it with more people, I'm prepared to sit in the corner and wait it out.

Love the box designs, by the way. My favorites are the large b&w pic and the red one.

Keep up the excellent work. Like I really need to say that. [wink]

Well I'd imagine the 'big' GTA push will happen before/around Oct when the game is released [for PS3 and X360]....my new release date is Q1 '08 so I don't have to worry about that. I think I'll still beat the PC version to market and that's all that matters I suppose.

Now if I were creating a PS3 / 360 game like this I'd be shittin' my pants...but the PC market is wide open and unless they add all kinds of PC specific features to the game, we can look forward to a nice console port of GTA VI.

I'm making this game just for PCs and as such can include some different stuff besides I've got the whole RTS angle which GTA will never have.

Thanks for comments guys....back to database/website work...then I can get to the actual game once that is finished.

* As a side note, it's somewhat ludicruous to compare the work of 1 person to the work of 2 60-man teams one making the engine, one making the game, with millions of dollars in funding...I've spent $30k on my game...they probably spend that much on office equipment each year.
