User Created skins & 2 new screenshots

I'm contemplating allowing gang [in the user created clan sense] -specific skins to be uploaded to a central server to be used in multiplayer matches.

It's really quite easy to create skins since no detail needs to be in the actual texture, just color...so you can just use flood fill and pretty much anyone can make a skin.

Example skin created by Arular -

It's very easy to add new skins to the game, I'm contemplating making it an actual feature...

Anyways, This has forced me to post some in-engine shots...you can see the work in progress on the terrain / dynamic grass system.

Arular made a pretty good skin...here is how it looks in-game...

What if you had to choose a gang specific skin @ the beginning of each round...ie: you first choose Black, Italian, Latino...then you choose a skin for your gang. This will allow user-created gangs to have original skins since they'll have to choose a gang type which will never change, and they could then create a custom skin for that gang, instead of having to create 2-3 skins for each body type.

hmmm....

Sir Sapo
The potential for abuse of that feature is mind-boggling[grin]

Regarding abuse - I could have a "Report this skin" option since there could be 100s of user-uploaded skins to browse through...or a server could lock into "default skins only". By forcing the user to select only 1 skin for your whole gang it would let me get away with having less artwork...in a sense.

But yea, the game is gonna be 17+ but slapping a "Online experience may change" warning might fix that. I just wanna see the dude who creates the gang wearing the bathing suit from borat...ahhh.

I could think of other things from Borat that this could degrade into... and the bump mapping would even provide the wrinkles... woohuhuhuhuh o_O

Seriously, it is a cool feature, if you don't mind it being abused. Although, the less you continue to add features, the faster we gets our grubby mits on the game. ;-)

Like everyone else I see the potential abuse. The obvious would be nudity and illegal symbols, but you shouldn't ignore the possibility this gives cheaters when you deactivate the CRC checks on the skins. Cheaters could use special neon colored skins. Anyway, I'd definitely add a client side option to force the game to display the default skins.

Yea but I think the abuse would be funny :-D I wouldn't mind it.

Besides brightly colored skins wouldn't help much, and because of restrictive visibility calculations...making player models larger wouldn't help you either. And hit detetection is done server-side.
