Like many people towards the end of last year, when the SupCom beta was announced for Gamespy subscribers I dropped some cash on a subscription in order to get my hands on it.
However with said subscription comes various other goodies, such as a free game and the ability to get hold of other betas, thus I've been trying out random games over the past few months.
In this case I've given Sword of the New World a go; it's intrestingly fun.
Sure, it's your typical level grinding MMORPG and the translations from Korean to English kinda.. blow.. but then it is beta so that can be excused, so once you get your head around the brokeness of it and get into its... fun.
Unlike most MMORPG games this one is group based, so think Final Fantasy but in an MMO setting; you make a group of up to 3 characters and then wander about the world killing stuff (for example my team consists of a fighter, wizzard and elementalist). You have a 'family' in which you can keep multiple extra character and swap your team around as you need to, which is certainly different. Also, unlike say WoW the game plays like a 'traditional' top down RPG, in that instead of wandering via WASD or the arrow keys it' is click-move and I MUCH prefer this.
Aside from that the graphics are pretty cool it feels kinda powerful from the start; during my brief wander into WoW I found that if you got attacked by more than one creature at a time you'd best leg it or you are dead, in SoNW from the off your party can handle a few monsters at a time with no real problems, and the spells look kinda cool, as do the indicator for the amount of damnage to take/do.
I'm hoping things get more impressive as I level up; the only problem I've come across thus far is that sometimes it complains about me being in defensive mode for too long thus it'll automatically log me out in 'x' amount of time... the problem is, I've no idea how I got into defenseive mode or how to cancel it, heh
Still, I can see why the Korean's keep droping dead from MMO play, the game is good, some how better than the 'western' MMOs...
