Fog

Here's a mock up of the "fog of war" effect:

It's not actually based on lines of sight or anything like that yet. Just me clicking on squares to reveal them.

Not too sure about it really. I need to get the character moving about and revealing the map based on line of sight, but it hasn't turned out looking quite as cool as I hoped.

I'm tempted to create a rule for the maps that you can't have two diagonally adjacted blocks without a block joining them on at least one side. This makes a few things easier from the game logic point of view, but is a bit of a nasty restriction to put on the level designer (who is me, but that is not the point).

I think the system would work better on inside, wall-based dungeon levels than outside, since you can actually see through trees in reality.

But we'll see. I need to have a bit of a research into how other fog is implemented in graphical Rouge-likes. Any links anybody? Ratings for good ones.

Got a call out of the blue from an agency today who had seen my CV on one of these online CV sites.

They are based quite a long way away, but had a line on a permanent job about ten miles from where I live, weirdly enough.

Cut a long story short, I have an interview at the company tomorrow morning at 9am. The job sounds quite similar to my last major role (business development) and the salary range is pretty good, so here's hoping.

I'm working next week for minimum wage as an admin temp for a local company. For those of you outside the UK, that works out at about GBP5.50 per hour or GBP192.50 per week before tax.

So say GBP150 clear, times 4.2ish for a month - GBP630 clear per month at that rate.

Jesus.

That doesn't even cover rent and bills, let alone car, food and cigarettes.

(No smart-arsed remarks about quitting smoking please. I'll quit when they prise my tobacco and lighter from my cold dead fingers).

So the moral of the story is that if you want to live anywhere but a bedsit and own even a crap car like mine, minimum wage in the UK is not enough.

Anyway, I'm off to clean my girlfriend's trainers. Oh, the stupid crap you end up doing when you don't have a job.

£630 that is about what I make after taxes per month, I live in Sweden though, taxer are quite high, 33% currently. But well I manage for now anyway but as I don't know how it is in the UK but here you manage with less anyway. Trying to cheer you up, but I don't know if I'm doing a good job [smile]

Yeah, I appreciate your effort and I shouldn't complain too much. The property rental prices here are the problem. My monthly rent is £490 plus £80 council tax. If we were to get a mortgage, you can add another £200 onto that figure.

That's all before bills, food, car, anything.

The UK is a great country to live in and I love it, but they could really do with shaving a bit off property at the moment. Probably as bad everywhere else though.

Ok, I understand how the rent can be a problem...I'm currently paying £192 per month in rent. But then I have a mortgage to pay, and that is around those numbers to.

Didn't know it is so expensive to live in the UK.

Yeah, property is nuts over here at the moment. £192 wouldn't even get you a room in a shared house in the South.
