The water slowdown bug is now fixed thanks to HandCraftedRadio, so download the updated version!
He suggested that I use a checker pattern for the water sprite, alternating between blue and the transparent color(pink), instead of alpha blending. It worked quite well:
It's a great fix that repaired the slowdown caused by the water sprites.

Top class old-school fix. I used to do shadows like that with DirectDraw.

I personally think it looks better than the old water, and ofcourse, it runs better too.
