Okay, so I got my work term report done last night, but I was too tired to get any game work done.

So I called the GM service centre to see what's up with my car (a 2001 Cavalier VLX sedan) as far as their last diagnosis about "preventative maintenance" on the head gasket.

These are the same techs who can't figure out why my Cavalier drops out of third gear when I hit a pothole or turn particularly sharply.

The tech promptly quoted me a price of $480 + labour, to which I boggled initially. He then went into a spiel about how the head gasket is a complex piece of technology and it's hard to replace in a GM engine. While he's talking, I'm pulling up the Wikipedia page on head gaskets and opening an IM to my gearhead friend.

Result? I picked up a new head gasket for my car for something like $8 at Auto Value (they don't give you itemized receipts, so it's hard to tell the 'head gasket' apart from the various tools I also bought). So that's my weekend project sussed right there. Anyone interested in seeing pictures and video of the inside of a Cavalier's engine? Bueller?

So guess what kind of car I'm not buying again?

Rav the mekanik????

Sucks about your car. Automotive repair is almost as big of a joke as democratic elections. Anyways, good luck with getting that fixed -- I wonder if IC engine repair will help out with your resume??

That's just garages for you... on my travels around Europe I bumped some guy's car (200m from the ferry port on the way home, after 3000 miles...) and caused a dent in the front wing. It's going to cost me £450 to fix (exactly what my excess is!). I figure I could buy a Suzuki Liana front wing off eBay, get it sprayed, strap it to my bike and ride over to France to fit it for him for much less. Absolute fucking rip-off.

Funny, at the beginning of the month I had to change the head gasket on my car too - and I had to pay 1400€ Can I consider that at 480$ + work, this is a fair price? [smile]

I've heard those Cav 2.2L engines are fairly easy to do the head gaskets on, but the 2.4s are a mite trickier. I've never done a head on a Cav, but I've done plenty of heads on GM trucks (and 1 Beretta), so unless there is weirdness about the Cav, that guy was bullshitting you about GM head gaskets being tough. They're about as easy as one can reasonably expect, easier than many others in fact. Seems like those cars have a problem with head gaskets, though. I did a google for complaints, and there are lots of folks mad about blown gaskets running around. If there is a problem with the engine, it might be worth it to have a shop that'll warranty the work do it, in case it blows out again prematurely.

If not... have fun!
