4 Years of work.

I started work on what has become 'Urban Empires' with a blank directory on November 3, 2003 [thanks to comments in source files heh]. Exactly 4 years ago...I was in college at the time, once I signed the publishing contract in 2005 I started working on the game fulltime.

The game was first called 'Agent 51', and then 'Gang War', and now it's 'Urban Empires'...

I'm going to continue work until the job is done, which should be in the relative immediate future...then it's on to game #2 and iteration #2 of the engine, etc.

4 years! When are you up for parole? Sorry, it's just starting to sound like a prison sentence at this point. =b I admire your perseverence. Happy anniversary! =)

I think you are an inspiration for the rest of us.
Hope you have luck with your game once it goes gold.

It would be really nice if you could write something explaining how you went from college to signing a deal for a game, how you managed to convince a publisher you were up to the task etc etc. I'm sure it would be an interesting read and inspiration for many people who visit GameDev. Probably something for when the game ships though.

Hey guys! Thanks for the comments.

I will do a detailed write up on every aspect...good/bad...etc. and explain the history of the project once it's finished, and before I move on to "number two". I will detail every step of the process from day one, to ship date (ZOMG with screenshots!)...in the hopes that it will help out other people and allow them to live their dream in the same way I am right now :-D

Also, I don't think I'll be returning to school heh. I was teaching my professors back when I was 19, I'm sure after 3 years in the trenches working on a multiplayer game and writing the game engine from scratch, managing a 6 figure budget, etc...it would be even worse. Given I didn't attend MIT, or some ivy league school, it was a major university, and I have some interesting stories :-) I've been coding in C since I was 12 years old, so I had a little leg-up.

Plus I don't think at this stage there is anything a professor could teach me that I can't learn on my own for free by just reading the book. Also I don't think smokin' a Music Appreciation, or Advanced Bowling course will further increase my game development skills lawl.

Good effort man! I remember back to the days of Gang War (though not Agent 51, unfortunately ;) )

Quite inspiring to see how far you've come. Just watching you push the bar higher and higher as time goes on.

All the effort has been worth it. Can't wait to play the beta!

You must be really proud of yourself.

Congrats on the 4 year mark, man! It has been very impressive to see your dedication in action as you've progressed through this adventure. I don't think anybody doubts the difficulty of game design/developing, but you sure have made this look pretty darn easy. But we can all imagine how many hours you've spent on this behemoth. :)

I wish you the best of luck post release!

Oh, yeah, and that College thing. That's pretty much out of the window. There is a thing with 'Programmers' and college. If you kick ass at programming who the frack cares if you have a degree? Uh, and if you have a PUBLISHED game under your belt, who, then, would really give a rats ass? Ha-ha! It's almost silly to think about. ;) I'm sure people are out there that will be a bit jealous. But you seem to have the ability to keep rolling on your own. Release this beast, raise some capital, and you're well on your way to becoming a legit entrepreneur.

Again, Good luck with everything.

Peace!

Dave - Thanks a lot buddy I really appreciate it! I agree with what you're saying and I hope things work out. Thanks man.

Luke - Yes...the good old days of Agent 51...lol. Thanks for comments.

I guess it really does come down to self dedication...and what you're willing to give up to get what you want. :-)

Now...back to work on that BETA! heh
