Pixel Art...-icle?

Read the title of this post again... get it? Pixel Art(icle), it's a play on words!

Anyway, Gaiiden has inquired if I would be willing to write an article or two on art, particularly pixel art, but I don't see why I couldn't add one on technical illustration in Photoshop.

I'm actually posting this entry to see what people want to know how to do, like looking at what I've drawn, what strikes you as the most interesting, or what you don't understand how to do(but want to)?

You can look through this journal, watch those videos from last entry, or look in my deviantART Photoshop and MS Paint galleries. Basically, I'm trying to answer all questions on my art, because those are the ones I can answer confidently, and explain in detail.

So... what do guys want to know?

Heya! Glad to hear that you are going to contribute to the gamedev.net community. It's about time that knowledge started to bleed out a bit. ;)

I would think that the most desired information that somebody would want to know about pixel-art is regrading shading. Or giving a "Box" the unique feeling that it is a 'wooden-box'. How do you mix your pixels so that it looks like a realistic surface? Are there any TOOLS that you use to help you get the look that you want? Or is it just the 1x1 pixel pen? That sort of stuff.

And remember. Don't assume we know anything. Start basic, and progress evenly. Or if you write something advanced, show something that you'd expect the reader to understand or would be able to do.

In a similar vein to Dave's suggestion, I'd like to know a bit about how you go about choosing colours to recreate the materials you're creating an image on, as well as the different effects that can be used to, for example, make grey metal sleek and shiny while grey stone looks dull and rough.

Sweet, can't wait to see what you got Mark. How bout we try something simple for the first article? It can be tougher to do than you think - poor Rich has had to extend his article into three parts because he didn't scope it well enough.

Good idea, I remember the tutorial I did a while back didn't cover the minutiae of shading/texturing very well.

I think I'm going to try and split it up into sections that work together as a whole, and that can be used as stand-alone referrences, so if you already know how pixels work, but are fuzzy on how shading should work, you could skip ahead(although you can never review too much)

Ah, ok. Yeah, I'm still not a total master of that, but I think I can explain it reasonably well.

I think I'm gonna start with the MSPaint one, which is fairly straightforward, but might be kind of boring without the other article, to apply the knowledge.
