Another Important Milestone Reached...

...in this case, my thirtieth birthday. The big Three-Oh. You youngsters had better respect my ability at staying alive.

Somewhat related to me getting older, is the forum having a bigger upsurge than usual of new posters? I seem to see a higher than usual newbie count in the recent threads, but that could just be my imagination. Is there a holiday or something in North America to justify this - I thought the usual peak season for newbies was June, when (and excuse my pessimism) it seems kids on their summer break get bored of playing WoW and discover the forums to ask how to make a MMO. (Don't get me wrong, I love helping newbies, but I find it a bit sad that most of these guys make a handful of posts and then disappear forever.)

Woo, happy birthday! [smile]

Yeah, I've seen a lot of new people in the past month or so. I don't know if it's a holiday somewhere, or if it's the start of courses somewhere else. Although I've been seeing more sane questions (Admittedly pleanty with unhelpful questions like "I have a string in my code and it's not writing properly, what could be wrong?") than "ZOMG HOW DOES I MAEK MMO PLOXOLOLO?"

I turned 29 on the 16th, what date was yers?

Today. Hence the post.

And I'm now officially past my birth time (I was born in the evening), so I'm really 30 now.

That's true. Although these days it's increasingly hard to gauge the age of someone from their language. There's plenty of intelligent articulate teenagers on the forum, and the occasional person in their mid-twenties with the "I MAEK GAMZ!!!11!" posting style. It's hard to know whether it's school break just from the posts alone.

Happy Birthday.

Do yourself a favor and buy yourself a birthday gift for your Python fetish =)

Game Programming: The L Line, The Express Line to Learning by Andy Harris is the book you need to set you fast on your Python game making at light speed! =)

I've bought all the Python gaming books and this one is the best imho. The author is a university lecturer who teaches beginners how to make games and his skill in teaching shows (or should it be shines) throughout this book.

Amazon has it on sale for only $25 or so currently so you can get it for $10 less than I paid =P

I also bought Beginning Game Development with Python and Pygame: From Novice to Professional by Will McGugan and I have to say I don't like it that much. The Amazon comments are spot on about him making you learn his game library and it being out of date and a pain when standard python libraries for calculating vectors has been around for a while. However, if you are a book nut that wants the whole collection its ok to read but you will see quickly how much better The L Line book is written and teaches you.

You'll be up to speed on 2D game programming in no time with The Express Line book except for 2.5D psuedo-3D tile games, I have yet to find any good books or libraries for that.

For gaming libraries be sure to check out

Pygame, Pyglet, and Rabbyt which have links on the wikibooks page here:

Good luck and keep on making games! =)

Speaking as someone a couple of years past thirty, I can assure you that it really is all downhill from here.

On that note, happy birthday [grin].
