Okay guys (and gals?)

This is the first bit of the design document for the game I'm working on. It will be a freeware... action/tactical RPG. I'm working on a demo/preliminary release, but I haven't set a date yet. Well, once upon a time there was a date. But I'm not going to tell you...

Anyway, this is the text of the opening cinematic. Make of it what you will, I don't think I'll give any more hints as to the game's actual content (but there should be enough there to discern it!)

On with the show!

INTRO:

"Once upon a time,..."
"In memory not so far away"
"(unless we're talking virtual memory)"

---fade into beautiful night scene with rolling grassy hills, light spilling forth from a flickering candle lamp---

"Lived a world of lore and legend"
"A realm of realism and magic"

"But the Golden ages of this world have passed"
"A great war between mighty kingdoms shattered the land"

---thunder sounds, lightning strikes. Rain pours forth from the sky---

"In a final decision to save the world, a powerful mage attempted to cleanse the world from all evil"

---scene freezes---

"But then, something happened that no one had ever expected..."

---pause---

"The world lost a dimension!"

---heightmap explodes, particle effects go beserk, rain goes everywhere (preferably up)---

---fade out to white---

"Millenia passed"
"The story turned to legend, legend to myth"
"And some things that should never have been forgotted were lost forever..."

---Intro credits---

---Title---

---continue with chapter one intro---

The world lost a dimension!

Would this dimension be one of the three that we live in, or would it be one of the x dimensions that scientists have discovered? (gravity, time, who know what else...) If it were one of the three dimensions, would the player's viewpoint be confined to 2D? Or if it were on of the xth dimensions, would part of the gameplay be scientific laws (such as gravity) going berzerk? Just curious...

That one. Good question though - I never actually thought about it being one of those *other* dimensions... but yeah, the whole game is in 2D except for certain cut scenes that have to do with the "destruction of the world"...

Is that re-worded or a direct quote from Tolkien? It could snap people into the wrong mind-set if you're not planning on using elfs and dwarves and such

It sure is a direct quote!! I'm glad you caught that - I like messing with peoples minds, but usually no one gets that.

Oh well. There'll be dragon and stuff enough for them to play with and/or kill. [wink]
