OSDev Series: Tutorial 18: Virtual Memory Management

Sometimes these tutorials just get fun to write [wink] Tutorial 18 covers alot of topics including:

  • Virtual Memory
  • Memory Management Unit (MMU)
  • Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB)
  • PAE and PSE
  • Paging Methods
  • Pages and Page Faults
  • The Page Table
  • The Page Directory Table
  • Implementing Paging

It develops a virtual memory manager that manages and provides an effective interface for managing and working with pages, page tables, page directories, and virtual memory in general.

I will be updating the tutorial with some more content and the demo within the next couple of days. Until then I am wanting to hear feedback on readability, ease of reading, and ways to improve both the text and code within the tutorial.

Please let me know what you think! This tutorial builds off the physical memory manager build in the previous tutorial.

I read Operating System Concepts by Silberschatz et al. back when I was doing my BSc. in Software Engineering so I know enough to know that you know what you're talking about. Frankly, I haven't read your tutorials thoroughly due to timing constraints, but the fact that you've taken it this far deserves a praise. I just wanted to drop by in order thank you as a member of this community for taking the time and putting forth the effort to do this. It's obvious that you're doing this out of love which delightens me to a great extent. Your target audience might be small, but I assure you that your efforts won't be neglected. I hope you continue writing these tutorials for a long time to come.
