Non-development Entry

I was digging through my shit, looking for a notebook, and I found one. On the first page, I've written down a question I heard a long time ago (and I don't remember where I heard it, so please don't ask. I know it was being retold by someone who had been asked it in an interview) I'm going to post the question, and I'm just curious what you guys would answer. Also, if you've seen this before and know what the answer the person was looking for is, please don't post it!

"You're driving alone in your car on a wild, stormy night. You pass by a busstop and see three people waiting:

  • An old lady who looks like she's about to die.

  • An old friend who once saved your life.

  • The perfect man/woman of your dreams.

Which one would you offer a ride to, knowing that there can be only one passenger?

Put the old lady in your car to wait while the ambulance you phoned for on your mobile comes

When it arrives ask the friend who saved you to go with the lady in the ambulance as he/she is already a kind person who would happily do that anyway

Give the person of your dreams a lift having already scored points with them for taking care of the old lady. use the journey to win their heart if you can.

Given that I don't drive I'd be waiting at the bus stop too. :-/

Can you add me to the list of people who'd like a lift?

...before driving off with the woman of my dreams I open the boot of my car, take out my laptop and hand it to sprite_hound. He is instantly distracted, forgets the storm is going on, and gets on with some gamedev forum surfing until the bus arrives.

I'd hand the keys to my friend and tell him/her to take the old lady to the hospital.

Then my dream woman and I would talk the night away under the brilliant lightning. :)

The old friend, that's an easy one. (ignoring the general complaint that there's many more options than just driving off with only one)

The woman is old; prolonging her life is not a great boon, especially if she has an illness that has progressed to be visible.

And even if the woman looked like the woman of my dreams, she wouldn't be the woman of my dreams in every other way (and certainly wouldn't be interested in a dude like me) [grin]

As shadowcomplex says, the official answer is that you get out of the car and ask the old friend to give the old lady a lift in your car to the hospital. You then get the bus home with the man/woman of your dreams, giving you a chance to try to get it on with them. This is the interview-answer as it demonstrates thinking "outside of the box" and other psycho-babble like that.

However, personally I'd probably aim for the puddle in front of them as I roared passed laughing hysterically. I mean, hell, I'm driving a two-seater so I've probably already got a girlfriend.

ukdm and shadowcomplex get kudos for good answers and sprite_hound get's kudos for a hilarious answer. HOWEVER, I myself would probably go EasilyConfused's route [evil].

That reminds me of another one we had in an Organizational Behaviour class. It was more or less "You've got a list of people, and 5 minutes to decide who you want to come into your nuclear-proof bunker before a bomb goes off". It was really quite entertaining, and I thought would be a good basis for a game. I'll have to see if I can find my notes on it...

I'm posting this before reading any of the other comments. I'd definitely leave the old lady, but the other two are subjective based on the needs of my buddy who saved my life. I'm all about repaying and honoring debts - in fact I think it's the only shred of true "honor" left in today's society - so if he was in dire need of a lift I'd take him over the girl of my dreams, which would be my top choice

"An old lady who looks like she's about to die." would be the mature thing to do; and it'd be the choice I'd want myself to make.

I might be tempted to give a lift to someone who once saved my life, however.

And I probably wouldn't offer a ride to 'the person of my dreams' even if she was the only person there. I'd be way too suspicious. I know better than to assume exactly what I want will just fall into my lap.

I'd pull over, say hello to the person who saved my life (he can probably handle a storm just fine) and pass my email address along (with a note on the paper asking to get the number of the woman of my dreams), and pick up the old lady and take her to the hospital ASAP.

^_^

The old lady because: the friend who saved your life would understand - hell they'd probably insist on your choice and the man/women of your dreams would respect you for you decision... otherwise they'd hardly be the man/woman of your dreams would they ;)

although choice D) let them all in, seriously how many of us on GameDev have cars with only two seats?

Upon driving up and seeing the situation I would remember that I had read about it in Programmer16's dev journal and thus realise that I was living in a hypothetical situation. Since the car, bus stop and people were not real and I would have no consequences for my actions, I'd swerve off the road and run them all over, laughing hysterically as I drove off.

The old lady (Who might leave me some inheritance when she passes) might be useful, and the woman of my dreams would be awesome, but this life is all you have, and someone who saves it deserves a lift :)

Three people waiting at the bus stop; one is about to die; the other two are healthy. The choice is easily done IMO. By the time you've arrived to the conclusion that "using a trick" you could satisfy the three, the old lady would have died..
