Map Editor Update

Hello everyone, I had some time last night to add to my map editor. I finished up the menu and added in the option to add objects to the map. I've also programmed my engine to know what each object is supposed to do and what action it should take. Just encase anyone reading this doesn't know, this engine is made to design 2D Maze games. I had made a small Maze example in an early entry to show everyone what I wanted to be able to accomplish. I'm going to be working on basic monster AI at some point which will not take too long to add for how the engine was designed from the start.

I recorded a video demo this morning to show my new features. You can watch it below.

So far everything is working out great. My books are supposed to come in sometime before Friday, so I will be using my weekend coming up to study and hopefully get working on the engine for my other project within a week or so.

Now I'm off to study for my exam.

Excellent work!

And just out of curiosity, I was wondering how you have the engine read in the items because that is something im working on also.

For example, Im thinking I am just going to have a item layer that my tilemap has and have my engine read in that layer but instead of drawing the items, create a list of the designated item.

But great job, and very quick too!

Audio on that video was a little low. I haven't finished watching it, but I am watching your journal [smile]

Sorry about the audio, I better see if I can fix it and re-upload it.

I have the engine read in the items just like it would tiles. However I could design it much better than I have because I'm forced to use the ground tile underneath as part of the graphic for items, since I have not programmed layers yet. It wouldn't be hard to add, I would just load from two files, one for tiles and one for items.

EDIT: I'm going to have to record my videos with no audio and use my studio equipment for the audio next time. Sadly this cam program isn't giving me enough audio volume.

Ahh ok i see...

As for having to draw the grass tile with the item tile, you could try saving the Image as a PNG and making the coin on a transparent background, or even make the "grass" part a pink color or something and have the engine remove all of that color. I believe its called "color keying", here is a link to how to do it, although its in SDL, you can get an idea of what I am talking about.

You might want to try out CamStudio for capturing. It's free and you might have better audio results:

I recommended it to EasilyConfused and he seemed to get on with it quite well.

Yep. The video quality is a bit low, but it is very non-intrusive - even a fully 3D rendered game seems to suffer no noticable slowdown while CamStudio is recording, which is a world away from Fraps, which crippled framerate while recording, albeit recording higher quality video.

I then tend to use Windows Media Encoder 9 to make WMVs from CamStudio's AVIs. The video quality goes all to hell at this point, but the movies are small enough to post easily.

I do have the option of doing that, however since layers are not part of my engine yet it wouldn't be able to show the grass tile under the item. This is why I have the items over the grass tile for now.

Thanks for a the link. :)
