The Carrier 2 remake is now dead. Gone. Buried.
With the intended release of an official Carrier Command game from the new IP holders, I can't really continue with my friendly remake.

I do intend to take what I have, hopefully get more people on it, bypass any IP issues and get something released. Eventually.
And with the planned modding ability, it's not beyond imagining that someone could come up with a mod that resembles a certain other Carrier commanding game ;)

Carrier2 has served me exceptionally well in it's original purpose: a way of learning 3d graphics and games-related programming in general. Looking back at the first screenshots I have to have a little chuckle :)
I think I opened it up publically far too early as you all know - it's taken quite some time, though as games programmers know all too well, once a game is 90% finished, you still have the other 90% to get done...
I've been astounded by the enthusiasm people still have for the game, and the support I've had from literally hundreds of people all over the world.

Ah bum. I've been following since stumbling across you're original post's on your own site and it's been really great to see how you've constantly developed the game and yourself over the... erm years it turns out that it's been :S

Anyway, I'll keep reading this just to see what you move onto next and I hope you can eventually release something of the work you've done so far so that we may "command-things-which-carry-other-things-for-the-purpose-of-taking-over-islands" ... not the snappiest title ever [grin]

That sucks [depressed]

Maybe you could leverage what you've got to make something similar that doesn't break IP? Anyway, glad to hear you learnt plenty from the project.

Sad to see the project ending. I know this has been a long term project for you and lots of your time and energy has gone in to developing it.

I rember right at the start you saying how it was a project to help you learn programming. Well I think we can all see that you have progressed far in that field.

Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing how your projects progress over the next 5 or so years :)

Hopefully there arent too many IP issues other than the name. Presumably all of your code is your own, and if it was possible to copyright the concept (or look & feel) of a game thered have been far fewer space invaders/quake/street fighter/mario world/command & conquer/etc clones released over the years.

I will have a think as to what i can contribute to any future development.

Ironically i'm fully expecting the 'official' game to be dumbed down for the gamepad generation ;-)

That's a real bummer, man. It was looking really awesome just recently.

The remake won't be half as good as yours, I bet. You should change your game's name to something like Battleship Bastard and release it anyway.

that's a real shame to see it end like this; especially after all the work that you've put into it... It will be great to see what you do with the game engine, and I'll continue to visit here to watch the progress as usual :D!

Having followed on the original site, then moving on to the the other forums, and finally on to here, it's amazing how far you've taken it!

Best of luck on new projects, M!

I am GUTTED! I confess I am completely selfish and was hoping that this project would be released soon that I could relive my misspent youth. Alas, those many nights spent playing into the wee hours as a young boy will remain forever part of my past.

I've been following this project on and off almost since it's inception, I remember the old Aussie forums, and the users that have come and gone. This project had quite the little cult following and I am sad to see that die.

I'm also sad for Martin because while he has undoubtedly gleaned a huge amount of valuable knowledge with regards to creating 3D games, and managing gaming projects in general, I can't believe that he too is not hugely disappointed to not have a final product that he can show the world. With that said, I wish him all the best with his future endeavours.

I must resist the urge to post something hateful or spiteful against the IP holders. However, it seems like yet another example of our greedy society at work; somebody sees the opportunity to "make a quick buck" and doesn't think twice about who they crap on to achieve that. I'm seriously considering boycotting any future "official" carrier products at this point.

I suppose there isn't much more to say... the end of an era. It's been fun watching this project unfold, drooling over screenshots and movies, but I guess it's time to hang up the captain's hat.

Severely Disappointedly Yours,
Darren AKA Darkbee

I am hugely disappointed at severing the link with the CC name.
I can't blame them for snapping up the name though, as IMO it represents scope for some great gaming opportunities. Some of their ideas sound great, and their concept art is amazing (but then they have an amazingly talented guy doing it!) just hope they can translate it into the game well.
So I won't begrudge them that part if they do the original CC justice. As for their dealings with me, that's another matter...

Looking to the positive, I can now ditch some of the more awkward and outdated elements of the original and move forward without the cries of heresy. I may take my work underground for a while though, to stop it falling into the wrong hands ;)

Nine/Norm/Stu/Darren: did you get a mail from me? Too many old-timers with too many aliases to be sure... mail me if not.

I should have said before, but all you old timers (and not so old timers) are welcome to come hang out at www.darkbee.com and reminisce about the good old days.

You can even download and print your own copy of my original Carrier Command islands map that I made (http://www.darkbee.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=viewnews&id=12). Something for you to dry your tears on and mourn the loss of our dearly departed.

I'm really sorry to hear that... I'm wondering if I had continued to give support in creating models and image-maps, would the project still be abandoned? I was really hoping to see this come to fruition. I've seen so many great games lost to dated oblivion. Carrier Command, Frontier Elite Etc... Sad Sad... ;(

OH GOD! It's "Jaakko Peltonen" all over AGAIN!

Promise for years on end to deliver something... and we get SQUAT!!!

What a waste of our time and support!!!

The only bright side is that at least FINALLY a professional organisation is finally taking over and we will finally see a FINISHED PRODUCT!!!

SOMETHING!!.. ANYTHING!!.. Is better that NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I understand you probably feel a bit pissed off about it.
But try devoting 6 years of your spare time to something to then have it legally pulled from under you.

DUDE!!!

My post wasn't meant to make you spit the dummy and give up! It was meant to give you a kick up the butt so you would stop feeling sorry for yourself!

The ONLY thing you can't use as far as I can see is the name! SO CHANGE THE NAME!!! If you like, change one or two other things in the game to be sure, like water for ether, and islands for planets, and you're back in business!

It's all your own code I presume!? So why waste it?! Make something of it!!!

Bring on SPACE CRUISER COMMAND!! or whatever you choose to call it!

You'll still have our support if you continue on!!!

Now get that file off the web and get back to work on it!!!!!!!!!

Aph3x don't give up.

I've been following your progress since I stumbled on your site last year I think it was.

I can't see any reason why they can stop you from doing your own version of the game as a private project provided its not released to the public!

One also has to wonder why no-one 'challenged' you earlier, since your site has been up for 5 years. Given that there was all that kerfuffle over Scrabble on Facebook last year (my understanding was that the owners of Scrabble HAD TO take action or they would have effectively been giving up their copyright to the concept / name) it makes you wonder!

Keep at it. Its your project to learn from so (if you can) see it through to the end. Get it to be the game you always wanted it to be - ditch any of the bits you didn't like of the original and add new features that you always wanted!

6 years is a lot of time to invest, as you say, but by the looks of the screens you have achieved a great deal - I'm envious as I am hoping to do my own Carrier Command version as a fun way of using the XNA game studio. I can't draw models for toffee (but I'll certainly be giving Blender a good look and give it a try)and am too lazy to learn the ins and outs of OpenGL or Direct X etc and write an engine from scratch. I just want something to deal with all that overhead and let me get on with shaping the game!

I hope you come back to it and if I can help in any way I'd love to!

Oi oi! No-one said nuffink about giving up. It's all said in the first post.
I just gave up worrying about legalities of making something available to the public :P

Glad the project is going forward - you've done way too much to give up now!

(Long time no chat BTW.. :) ).

Just got to hope that no-one re-makes this one and gets pissy about the name.. ;)

Hey Grunes,
lol yeah - no 's' on the end of mine, and it's a 'working title' ;)
I remember briefly playing it on the Amiga - another strange one.

Hi There,
I've been silently following your project for some time, having been a fan of the original CC game and other games like it. I'm saddened to hear that you're dropping it, even with the new game in development.
FPS-RTS games are hardly a crowded genre so I hope that your hard work will feed into a project that reaches completion. I know how hard it so to finish stuff like this (I'm a graphicsy games programmer myself).

Anyway, good luck with whatever projects you end up doing.

Tim Lewis.

Hi Martin,

Just figured I'd say hi as no updates for a while now.. :(

Are you going to carry on with this developer blog or switch to a new one due to the name change?

OR have you just become disheartened with the whole thing? (Say it ain't so!!)

hey martin

been following your project for about a year on and off, you have come a long long way and it saddens me to hear your troubles with the IP, which to my limited knowledge there should not have been... (i would love to have this problem explained indepth though)

anyways! i hope you can use what you have done somewhere else (call it "Assault Carrier Operations" or something similar ;))

keep your sprit up!

Only slightly disheartened ;) I have been concentrating on another project recently - you know how it is - a house & 4 mouths to feed with only one job :-/

I'm trying to recruit a few people so I can actually get 'Archipelago' finished one day. So if you code or do 3d modelling etc, give me a shout.

@Tim & PB: check PM please.

Hi

As promised (erm.... about 6 months ago or longer), i will still dedicate webspace to allow download space for the "game", although hoping it still looks like blue water and a boat... :)

That said i wont have a shed load of space until Jan 2010 i wouldnt think.... :)

Many Thanks
