Introducing the Game Networking Guild

A funny thing happened on the way home from GDC the other day.

I was in the San Francisco airport, after having finished my previous journal post on the experiences of GDC 2012. I packed up my laptop, wandered over to the gate, and happened to spot a familiar face. We'll call him Steve, because that's his name.

So Steve is someone I've known for all 5 of my GDC years now, and runs a nifty little outfit called the AI Game Programmers Guild, of which I happen to be a member. Steve was talking to this other guy, who I didn't recognize; turns out he's Jeff.

Jeff and Steve had, somehow between them, concocted an evil scheme: to start a sister guild for game network programmers. Moreover, this new guild would be responsible for (among other possible feats) publishing game network programming books and articles, hosting a summit at GDC each year, and so on.

Needless to say, I was instantly interested.

The Game Networking Guild is now officially launched. We are currently centered via a private Google newsgroup which acts as our primary point of meeting, conversing, sharing ideas, solving problems, and generally having a great time in the realm of network programming.

Our goal, as a guild, is much like that of the AIGPG - to further the state of game networking and multiplayer technologies. It may sound lofty but it's well within reach, as Steve (and his counterpart Dave over at AIGPG) have proven. I think this is an extremely promising venture and I can't wait to see what we can do with it.

If you're interested in becoming a part of this endeavor, or know someone else who would be a good addition to the guild, drop me a PM here on GameDev or shoot me a direct message @ApochPiQ on Twitter.
