there has been a been some refactoring effort since the 2013-02-17 version.
some optimizations ended up being disabled for now due to being "not sufficiently reliable".
also, elsewhere on here, wrote something about compilers and interpreter design tradeoffs, will see if/when it is hopefully approved.
it is mostly intended to be "general", as sadly, there is probably enough information about all this that to more effectively cover it would probably require a book or something.
