End of year gas bagging

Having time off work for the holidays, I've been doing a bit of navel gazing, reflecting on this Goblinson Crusoe project a little bit: where it's at, where it came from, where it's going, etc... I'm still hoping to make this one, finally, a success. But it's interesting to go back and see the evolution of it.

It started with a procedural island demo:

From there, it just sort of evolved:

At some point I took a break and worked on some other stuff; when I came back to it, I switched it to hex and turn-based:

I played around with the graphics creation process, learning a few new tricks and recycling a bunch of old ones:

Then I took another break from it. Went to California, dinked around with a few other projects. When I came back to GC once more, it evolved again. (I'm seeing a pattern, here. Breaks are bad.) I started playing with *gasp* full 3D:

GC evolved even more, with new camera motion and controls.

Then I took another brief break. Bought a house, did some remodeling, had another kid, etc... The usual stuff you do on breaks. When I came back, GC changed again a little bit:

Gone are the mountains and the Civ-y feel to it. This cycle brought it back down to a smaller scale, and I started playing with lighting and alternative environments.

Until here we are.

It's been a fun ride so far. I've learned a lot, and have really stretched my skills. Still have a long way to go, though, and real life doesn't really make it any easier. But I'm looking forward to see how this thing evolves further in the future.

Merry Christmas to everyone (a bit late, I know) and Happy New Year.

I like that you recapped the year and I may do something similar myself after seeing this. I especially, liked your comments, or pokes about breaks. :)

It's amazing the amount of progress you have. And it's great that you keep coming back to the project, my hard drive is full of unfinished ones.
