Progress Report - July 21st 2014

Beta 9 has been posted to the website, with a new download page:

http://rocklandsoftware.net/beta.php

I could really use some feedback on the game, so please, check it out! Its just a 60 meg download, and should provide about one evening's worth of gameplay.

Beta 9 now includes such niceities as real setup and uninstall programs.

Still needs audio and an opening animation. But I found a copy of caveman 1.0, complete with all the original wav files! And i still have source code for version 1.0, including the music player code. X Audio 2 based code is already in Caveman v3.0, - ready to go - just add wav files and stir!

I'm thinking I'll hold off on offspring, dinos, modern, an aquatic animals due to the time required to create the additional content (models, meshes, textures, and animations for babies, children, dinos, modern animals, and aquatic animals).

Audio and some serious play testing seems to be the next most important thing on the to do list for the project.

I also added a "quick tour" of the game to the website:

That's all for now!

Remember - keep your eye on the prize! Twice as important when its a big prize and takes a long time.

Hi. I've tried to play it and downloaded the beta.

But after installation I try to run caveman.exe and nothing happens (cursor appears as loading a few seconds and then stops). Any ideas? (Windows 7 machine, DX9 up to date)

Chrome is reporting the download as malware and blocking it. Will try downloading again through IE later when I wake up.

that one is a real mystery at the moment. no error messages whatsoever? only possibility i can think of is the system clock is not set correctly, causing the demo to think it's expired. beta9 is programmed to only run between june 1st and sept 1st of 2014.

i get: "file 'caveman3beta9_setup.exe' appears malicious" with a "discard" button next to it when i download through chrome.

checking the docs, it appears that a new "feature" of chrome is that any exe not verisigned gets flagged that way by default.

windows and some browsers etc tend to "freak out" at un-verisigned exe's,

just to be safe i ran a scan with malwarebytes anti-malware on the file. needless to say, nothing was found.

IE will (most likely) give a similar warning when you download, as will windows when you attempt to run the setup program.

does the game go into fullscreen direct3d mode?

another possibility:

the resolution autodetect code is currently hard coded for a maximum of 50 supported resolutions. if your graphics adapter supports more than 50 32bit ARGB resolutions, the program will fail silently, with no error message. this would occur just before it switches into direct3d fullscreen mode.

pretty much everything else before you see it go into fullscreen 3d mode has error messages that appear if something goes wrong.
