Challenge 1 - 3D Chess

Rutin

1275 views

I'm going to start doing my own personal challenges which are not time based, but I will be attempting to complete them as fast as possible and up to the requirements listed. These games are going to be smaller scale as I intend on completing a lot of different types of games for fun. There will be specific requirements, and once they're met the challenge will be completed, and I'll begin the next one. I'm hoping to have a large list of games done within the year. :) These are also not intended to be polished releases by any means.

Now what better way to start than a game we all know, chess! :)

Challenge 1 - 3D Chess

Requirements:

- Create a chess game that follows all movement rules including castling, double-stepping, and en passant.

- Main Menu to start a new game and leave the game

- Have an indicator that will show all possible movement paths, including if you're able to take or you're blocked by a piece.

- Game Over / Win Screen with an option to play again or return to the main menu

- 2 Player Local (Game will not have any form of AI)

- All assets used must be assets I've created (Graphics, Music, SFX, ect...)

I'll be posting frequent updates on this and should have something shortly to post. :) My approach to all these challenges will be prototype first then assets after.

I will update this post with links to all the parts.

Sounds like an interesting challenge!  Good luck with it, looking forward to seeing the progress!

Actually I quite fancy doing this too as I've never done a chess game. It's the right kind of scope for something that would be achievable .. although for myself I think some basic AI would be interesting to attempt. It was on the list for the gamedev challenge poll before but didn't get enough votes (perhaps it was just you and me who voted for it lol! :D )..

The idea about forcing yourself to create all the assets is an interesting one, including music and sound effects!

I'll have to see how time availability is too, and what the next official challenge is.

Yep, I voted for chess! :)

I was thinking about doing basic AI, but I decided not to at this stage just because I don't know how long it would take. :D Time to bring out my dusty midi controller and load up FL Studio for those SFX and Music. :D

If you ever decide to work on a chess game with AI let me know. :)

Yea, I'm waiting on the next challenge to see what is required and how much time we will have. Either way my schedule can go from open one hour and closed the next at a moments notice. I wont do any more challenges unless I know for certain I can complete them, especially after the last one.

Thanks for reading @jbadams & @lawnjelly

Non-AI controlled Chess is a good basic challenge. Perfect for taking your time with to focus on a particular element of development.

Yep! I thought it would be simple enough for my first challenge. I'll be done this by Friday anyhow I think... I know I could make AI based on a value system, but I'll leave it out for this one. My second challenge will have AI though.

This is I want to play when it's done and the AI learns from other players too ^_^y that would be cool!

I just wanted to say that I'm still working on this! Was heavily delayed this week but I'll have something this weekend to post. :)
