GameDev Challenge Poll

49 members have voted

You do not have permission to vote in this poll, or see the poll results. Please sign in or register to vote in this poll.

Time to vote for the next Challenge!

Select which themes you would be interested in for the next GameDev Challenge. You can select as many as you'd be interested in seeing, so be selective in your choice.

You may submit new options to add to the poll until March 13. Add a comment to this post to request a new challenge option.

This poll will close end-of-day March 22.

The Loot Box means we ignore all the votes and the theme is randomly selected from the list in the poll.

I have to laugh! While some of these are member requests, the RPG was my add. Dragon Warrior was a personal favorite growing up.

I still play Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest) on the NES.

If it becomes the choice I'll make a 2D clone. :)

Great game!

Looks like it might be Side Scrolling Arcade Shooter. :D I'll have to plan a very small project if I have any hope in meeting a deadline.

Yeah that was my thoughts too. I love RPGs too (probably my favourite games) but no way could I do one justice in challenge timeframes! :D Side scrolling arcade shooter sounds good though, very doable.

I'm working on some side projects right now and I'll be back to my Chess challenge... As you can see I'm barely keeping up with that which is why I ditched any time lines! 😮. Heck, you've done more than me in less time! :D But yea... I gotta prototype first, keep it simple, then polish and add on more after.

I also should've went full 2D with my custom engine and editor for the last challenge... would've been able to meet the deadline with 2D "programmer art". :D I just get too caught up in making something nicer. After the last challenge I got really disappointed not being able to finish, hopefully I can do the one to come. :)

They all sound fun to take a stab at but I don't think I'll be able to participate in any new challenges until at least June. Even then, there's other projects I really should get back to.

Looking forward to seeing more projects from everyone.

That is a shame. I hope to see your other projects!

I don't have a good way to tack this on as a poll, but any thoughts on a timeframe for the next challenge? Generally we've tried to do ~2 months for the last few. Has that been too long? too short? just right?

Having not had the time to commit to actually producing anything, so take this with a grain of salt, i think 2 months is a reasonable time for a prototype, particularly with the range of skillsets that visit the site... Theres plenty of gamejams that are already running elsewhere that push the <1month time frame.

Unrelated and somewhat rambly, I'd like to see some more value proposition from the site though and the gamejam/challenges we run here leading to opportunities for people... i've been to a number of conferences in Australia and GameDev.net is really not well known in a number of circles... maybe we need to get a bit more "rar-rar" chearleadery with it? I've been here for ~10 years over a couple of accounts, and i think we have something to offer.

Two months is just right I'd say, with a month of accepting late finishers like myself while we talk about the next one(*). Once a quarter seems nice and comfortable for what should be a fun activity. This new suggested increased exposure and fan fare is interesting. Are we ready for that? I mean look at us :D LOL <proud to be a member of the community>  edit: oh, go, side scroll-er go, go.... doom really wants it though.

(*) a month cool down period to perhaps discuss strengths and weakness. Maybe polish by committee type post discussions, things of that nature but more in group form. Just throwing it out there.

What happens in case of a tie???

A fight to the death using nothing more than Shatner quotes and foam bats.

Mods come in for tie breaker imo.

In the event of a tie, we crush the options unto themselves making in this case side scrolling doom? Could that even be a thing?

And here is something I've already done along those lines, so I hope that doesn't happen. :)

@Stragen like Khan!!!!! and Warp Speed ;p and where's my .bat

I like the follow camera behavior in the third example. That would be cool to try in a simpler world.

Aw, was hoping Dragon Warrior would come out on top. That was one of my main early influences. Grinding golden golems for sweet cash. Yeah. Never been much of a sidescroller fan. I guess maybe the castlevanias.

I made a game engine and level editor years ago just for making custom side scrolling games. It had a lot of features for items, triggers, camera options, ect... but normally I don't care much for side scrollers either, was hoping for a dragon warrior clone! Poll isn't closed yet... there is still hope?

I was planning to give that option a try. Although, any option on the list is quite a step up from anything I ever made with libgdx (pong clone). And if Doom wins I don't think that would even be possible for me with libgdx ...

o what are some key features you want to see? Now would be the time to give that input.

I know I've mentioned it before, but it would be sweet if under our avatar picture and name there was also a 'play' button that allowed for another user to try a WebGl supported game we host right here on GameDev.  So far my TD game has ~50 plays, and I know 15 of those were me :)

Just putting it out there.

Looking forward to the new site.

Maybe if there is a way for you to highlight something in your profile? Kind of like a "pin" on other platforms. A project, a blog post, a forum topic, etc.

Wouldn't that in effect be what people used to put in their signatures?
