Time to vote for the next Challenge!

Select which themes you would be interested in for the next GameDev Challenge. You can select as many as you'd be interested in seeing, so be selective in your choice.

You may submit new options to add to the poll until March 13. Add a comment to this post to request a new challenge option.

This poll will close end-of-day March 22.

The Loot Box means we ignore all the votes and the theme is randomly selected from the list in the poll.

I don't have a good way to tack this on as a poll, but any thoughts on a timeframe for the next challenge? Generally we've tried to do ~2 months for the last few. Has that been too long? too short? just right?

Just my 2cents on this.

I think 2 months is fine, anymore than that could cause the challenge to drag out for too long and maybe cause people to loose momentum. My prior issues with time comes more from my personal obligations and rapid change in availability, not so much from the actual content I need to make; I tend to think I have more time than I really do. I've also made the mistake of getting caught up in the asset polish stage before prototyping. I guess I just enjoy the art aspect too much.

There was a prior suggestion made to have a team challenge which would be really cool! Maybe something like 1 month or a few weeks with duos, ++ ect..

Another suggestion would be to have a "Rate the Top Entry - or best of 3 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place" where people can vote for one of the entries (not their own game), and there is a criteria when voting. The winner could also be featured by getting some recognition and a premium version of the badge is awarded based on the place won. This would apply to the singles entries as well. I think it would also be nice to a have a featured section some where on the front page. This would help promote indies and possibly increase engagement if people know it can bring exposure to them.

If people are able to sponsor prizes that would be a cool addition as well.

Anyhow... these are just some ideas.

Wouldn't that in effect be what people used to put in their signatures?

To a degree, yes, except I see signatures as free form and potentially beyond the container of GameDev.net. My thought is something you can select from all of your content on the site. A project, a blog entry, a forum topic/post, news, screenshot, video, whatever. In @Awoken's case, it would be a link/badge/icon to the Project (maybe a Play button) to help promote it. To set it, one might tag it as your "profile feature".

I might need to make another thread or area for these ideas. :)

That sounds perfect.

I think this is a mixed bag as it can be both encouraging and discouraging.  People do like being recognised for their efforts though.  Maybe instead of best in show, there could be multiple categories.  Original idea, Art style, Music, Writing.  And an entry can only receive one award per challenge.  Just a thought.

I also think the community should utilise these new groups more.  I certainly don't want to arbitrarily create one, but I haven't seen any pop up that don't serve some sort of site utility.  Or are the groups suppose to be more of a private thing?

Sounds like a good idea. :)
