I made a new test app to see what It would look like to use per-pixel lighting instead of per-tile and just to use the bump mapping to make the textures look like they are being lit from the correct direction. This is what I got:

Much better than the previous pic. I'm going to continue with this line of developement. It seems to be much more powerfull, as well as easier to extend than the last thing I tried. Tomorrow I'm going to add multiple coloured lights. Finding the correct direction for the bump maps to face when several lights are shining on a tile is a job for another day.
