I think I'm going to start learning DX again, specifically D3D. My goal is to have games that use 2D sprites but also 3D effects. This is basically why I want to work with DX. Also, after I get some experience with it, I'll move on to this book. It should be pretty fun to learn it, although I've had troubles with D3D before. I figure I'll give it another chance, though.

Make sure you read a couple chapters in the book store. I remember thumbing through it and not being very impressed...

Good point. I usually order my books online, but considering the fact that this book doesen't have a rating, I should read it first in the book store.
