Rant!

So i'm taking Physics over the summer, and so far it's quite frustating. Not because I don't know how to do the problems, they're easy, but because of the other people in the class.

The prerequisite for the class is Precalculus, but there seems to be a lot of people in the class that, while they may have passed the required course, have absolutely no clue what they're doing. An example question that someone asked on the forum:

How do I get a component on one side of the equation to the other when it's not already there?

Prerequisite in my mind means that you should actually know how to do what was in the course, am I right? The apparent lack of ability of some of these people irritates me as it slows the class down for those that do know what's going on. On Friday we spent over an hour on a 1-D Kinematic problem that should have been done in a matter of minutes.

What do you do, if anything, in situations like this? I've never been a confrontational person, i'm pretty quiet in person with people I don't know, but the entire class being brought to a near stop when these people don't know what's going on seems ridiculous. It's not the actual asking of questions, that's a good thing, but it's the actual questions that they're asking. GRRRR!

Just work ahead in the book and meet with the prof from time-to-time to ask brilliant questions. It can be frustrating. Are you asking any questions of your own in class? The dumb dumbs might stop asking stupid questions if they realize that others in the class are way ahead.

Hehe, no, i'm usually pretty quiet in class, but I have been working ahead. We have to visit and participate in the forum for the class, and i've answered questions on there, but I generally work best on my own reading the book and not asking questions or anything, that's the way i've always gone through classes.

Don't let it get to you; let them play dumb and get on with your work. Do what you have to do to pass the course to the level you want; read ahead/around if you're interested in more detail. Get hold of the teacher sometime and ask any questions that you dont get a chance to ask in class.

As funny as it might be telling them to stop asking stupid questions (and occasionally showing them back-o-the-hand for their stupidity [smile]) I can't really agree with interfering with their education...

You'll be fine [grin]

Yeah, I hadn't planned to interfere with them learning, it just seems frustrating with what they should know how to do and don't.
